about changes to lerk in 1.1?
I'll be honest, the only time I find myself going lerk is when that 3rd hive is up, and you get the evil green cloud™.

To be perfectly honest, I can't fly straight to save my life.

If there was an ns flying school, I'd be the kid who was always running over the cones.

That coupled with the fact that I prefer a good melee fighter, has shied me away from using the lerk.

So, I'm thrilled at the prospect of changes coming to the lerk that might make him all the more enticing to play, I can only imagine how much more dynamic my game play can become with this versatile beast

Depends on what the changes are. I like the lerk how it is - I don't want it being messed up.

I love playing as a Lerk, man. You can fly down any decently constructed hallway in the blink of an eye, have near-100% accuracy with the admittedly weak spikes, can umbra to save your buddies, and can spore the hell out of everything once hive #3 is up.

Personally I think they should modify spikes a tad to make them more useful, perhaps in an opposite way to how they changed umbra (and look how much difference that 6/7 -> 5/6 makes).

Oh, and why isn't there a Lerk smilie for the posts? Damn you racist forum admins. ;D

    Lerk? Not good melee? Awha?

What kind of Marines are you biting? I find it much easier to munch 3 or 4 of 'em as a lerk than I do a skulk. It's a whole helluva lot harder to hit something flying at you in the air than it is something moving at you on the ground. Plus, have you ever seen a thing called Umbra?

Use the Lerk at 2 hives or even 1 hive, you'll seen he rocks.

Hehe, the reason I suck with melee as lerk is because I can't fly worth a damn.

I try buzzing over the head of a marine after casting umbrea around him, but I usually just get swatted outta the sky

lerks rule i played one game (ns_eclipse) one guy kept flying in as lerk umbraing near the spawn portels and biting the hell out of um and anything else that went near him, and we couldent beat him because the damned com wouldent drop gl's.

p.s we need a lerk and fade emoticon.

I love spotting an unsuspecting marine at the end of a long hallway and darting towards him. He's usually dead before he hears my wings flapping!!

Lerk is my favoruite form, and any more balancing changes to us with a new patch would be welcomed by me =>

I do admit, the lack of ability before the second hive is kinda offputting for us, but flying i am fine with, i am unstoppable on the wing => Just somehting i am good at

Really, I play lerk all the time and I love it. Very powerful and useful. The only thing I'd want to see improved is the spike shooting animation -- it's misleading.

In my lerker expierence, / match expierence this doesnt apply to pubs as much to scrim/matchs. But lerkers are somewhat only good for 2ndhive/fade ending game battles or to ward off any jp/hmg rush's the marines try to pull. Other then this my clan has not found any good use for them. My suggestions would be to up the lerker long range dmg, thats all i think would be a good addition to the lerker at the moment since skulks r better in close combat anyways .

I wish the lerk was more useful at one hive, I find it worse than the skulk until at least 2 hives are up. I would say add a new ability but then we would have to take out spikes or bite so I dunno

Lerk spikes aren't really on arc... it's more of a straight line that just starts to decay after a long distance. Since not many maps have big, big rooms, not many people notice it. But try it out in a long hallway or something sometime, you'll see what I'm talking about.

*Sigh* none of you actually tested it at all did you?

Its obvious that the visible animation dips, but the animation has nothing to do with how the damage is calculated. The Lerk spike attack hits its target instantly as you press the fire button, and goes exactly to the crosshair. It doesn't matter where the spike model goes, the spike model isnt doing the damage.

Spikes are a rapid fire, hitscan weapon with high accuracy.

Its easy to check this on maps with breakable objects or with a friend. Try this: load ns_hera offline and go lerk in the marine spawn. Open the door leading to maintenance and stand slightly down the ramp, so the breakable grate is in view. Aim your spikes at the very bottom of the grate so that when you fire, your shots appear to dip and hit the boxes infront of the grate. The smoke puffs will also be visible on the boxes instead of the grate. Fire a burst or 2 into the grate, then start firing shots 1 at a time. When the final shot is fired, you will see that the grate breaks instantly when you press the fire button, before the spike model even leaves your lerk. And despite the spikes visibly dipping to hit the boxes, you still break the grate which is in your crosshairs.

i think a change to lerk should be more damage to buildings with the spikes. and faster drop time. they drop so slow and that is very important for them. and they take forever to shoot away buildings.
  • parkanparkan Join Date: 2002-11-17 Member: 9128Members
If nothing else, lerks are very useful for anihilating marine outposts in a discrete fashion. Most rines underestimate the damage of the spikes and forget to weld the pg/tf. Very useful for taking back hives such as powersilo, too.

If there were no lerks on the kharaa id only play marines. I really don't like fades, lerks at hive 2 are awesome. Once you get good enough you can fly over marines and point down and bite and since it has such good range you can kill them. Its great, not to mention a single lerk can easily take down a marine base alone, especially with the buffed up regeneration.

exactly wut ARE the 1.1 changes?

EDIT: lerks spikes are definately NOT hitscan.... there seems to be an arch and seems to be affected by gravity over long distances... ie refinery when ur on the cieling and aiming down.... the spikes seem to go LOWER than the target

All the alien models in NS are crappy which is seconded by crappy animations. I have had issue with all of them from day 1 and anyone who thinks they are "well done" is wrong. The skins are ok at best, but the models are ridiculous and would not place in any modeling contest.

When you fire near a ledge and your crosshair points below, but the animation show you hit the side of the wall, do you hit the "invisible ledge wall" or your target below?

Ive always found lerk cool as it is although it is abit of a waste when ya got 1 hive.

Flying and biting is always cool

Theres always room for improvment though.

I like lerk i think they can be one of the winning factors in a game. The only thing i would change is the animations that you (the lerk) see. As for the changes in 1.1 i would love to know wat they are but i think some kinda super powered spike that u hold down to charge it would be cool

I'm a marine. I play marines. I hate lerks. Lerks are THE most annoying thing on the face of the planet---I can handle 4 fades rushing in my base, I can handle a skulk that parasites me from god knows where... but nothing makes you weld more then a lerk... and nothing is scarier then a two hive lerk who knows how to play one... course my favorite weapon as a marine is the knife.... which has suprised many a knifed fade.

    Lerk > Fade.
    2 Hive Lerk > Marine.

For a, what is it, 6 year old engine these models are awesome. The animations would be more complete, but since they dont really effect gameplay, no biggie there. And I am sure by 2.0 they will have those accomplished.

I looked at your name, and I am betting you are one of those guys who have decided that NS should really be AvP with a comm, and gone and replaced every aspect of it with an AvP model. I am also taking a guess, and think that you dont think of an alien as an alien unless it looks like a giger designed bug(they are badass though).

So...I have to disagree with you here bud, and say that the models are very well done. Probally the best some of the best models of the HL engine.
The animations, I can agree with you on, they are neither good or bad. They are simply incomplete.
Of course, I am not much of graphics, I just like solid gameplay. And NS has alot more of that than many other games.
