Anyone resolve or figure it out? I still get dropped to console sometimes when I use voice comm. No message, no kick, no ban, etc. Just dropped to console. Only happens when I use the microphone. Sometimes I can go a long time and it doesnt happen, sometimes right away.

type "rate" at the console to see the current value

then type "rate 4500" for example if you want to set it to 4500.

Thanks! What does that rate actually do? And what would a higher/lower # indicate?

rate controls the speed at which your client talks to the server and vice versa (no expert here, just general knowledge and a bit of guess work, google it, there's a load of pages expalining hl's netcode etc)

there are a few other one's but the most crucial are your cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate which in conjunction with your rate tell the server and your client how quickly information is to be refreshed between you which will affect your network performance.

I'm on 64k isdn and have had best results with the following settings.

    rate 5000/5500
    cl_cmdrate 33
    cl_updaterate 26

people tend to say it's best to set your rates etc as high as you can till you start getting pl/choke (which you can check by typing net_graph 3 in the console. net_graph 1/2 also work but take away from your framerate a bit due to the amount of information displayed on screen. If you just want to see your framerate use cl_showfps 1. Then when you start getting pl/choke reduce your settings gradually until you can get the most stable ping with as many packets going in/out as possible. You'll just have to play around with them <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
