I'm So **** Right Now...

<div class="IPBDescription">'rines vent cheating and admins allow it</div> map was ns_bast. we had just gotten our second hive up @ engine room when it is bombarded by siege weapons. upon further inspection we find 3 in the vents nearby. even with fades, we could not do any damage to them because of the hitbox bug. there goes engine room. then they concentrate on feedwater until everyone has HAs and HMGs. the only reason they won that game was because of the hitbox bug. I told them to recycle the siege weapons because it was an exploit (cmon they had 3 invincible siege weapons in there.) but the comm just laughed at me. I got down his name and told everyone on the server i was going to tell the admins when they get here. turns out one was there.. and he didnt care. FYI HOMELAN server. i love that server.. but that really **** me off.

well anyway, i just started playing a week ago and i pretty much got the game down. its a lot more addictive then any game i've played but the only problem is it makes me dizzy sometimes. dunno why.. must be the colors.

hmm i wasnt aware seiges could be placed where they take no damage... is it in the part of the vent that you must duck or the larger area?

Invincible siege weapons? Marines immune to splash-damage weapons? That strikes me as something more along the lines of "welding and health spamming" going on.

I call it strategy... and you CAN kill sieges in vents. However, if you but a siege in a vent and a marine behind it with a welder then you pretty much create an impassable tunnel. But there are always TWO entrances to every tunnel.

So I don't really see how this is cheap or an exploit (and I say this as a person that plays aliens as much as I do marines).

If you go to the end of the tunnel, it is a dead end, and from that point, technically there is only one entrance.

Marine vent exploit/bug only works against melee attacks.

You can always fade exploit :x

Lerks have umbra for a reason. That umbra protects them from an anormous amount of damage (75-85% of incoming bullets stopped, depending on version), which means that all you should have to do in order to nail a vent base pretty hard is set up that umbra. He can spike away at the marines, chew away at the turrets, and do a hell of a lot of damage in general from inside of an umbra.

Nothing in this game is a "solution" to any other problem. I've seen brilliant strategies fail because six marines couldn't kill 1 skulk. I've seen stupid ones succeed because the team being played against wasn't quick enough to react or united enough to stop it.

And honestly, if these guys had 2 hives, going up against a siege base hidden in a vent... it's NOT THAT HARD to wipe one of those out. The marines are either crawling through vents to get there (making them good targets), or standing around in the siege base itself, meaning that you can spike away at them. If they're blocked up behind a siege tower welding it, just spray them with acid bombs... the siege will be fine but the splash will kill the guy inside.

The issue is not "it was impossible to kill them"... it was "we didn't react in an appropriate way to kill them." React differently. It's not an impossible situation.

I just find it rediculous that they can build in vents...

Aim up/down a bit when you attack with melee weapons in vents. That gets around the hitbox bug.

    wats ridiculous about it?
u really think nanotechnology is restricted to 'just' the main areas?

logically its sound. so wats yr point?
  • SuperflySuperfly Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3485Members, Constellation
If it fits in the vent then why should you not be able to build it?
  • TheGlowTheGlow Join Date: 2002-11-22 Member: 9650Members
And technically, whats wrong with perhaps building a turret or siege cannon and propping it up on a marines back? Or since they have infinite ammo, assign them specific locations to fire upon without fail. You know that skulk is bound to come in from that ONE vent. So, what if 3 of 5 guns are assigned to fire at that spot forever.
Logic is a loose concept. You bring that up, and you can bring up wacky stuff like this.

It's a vent, how does it support things like this? Unless these vents have "Uber support beams" I don't understand how a VENT, a VENT, can support such equipment. The fact remains so much of this game is unrealistic my argument is condradicting itself but I still find it rediculous.

They can camp in there as long as we have 3 hives, if they camp in there and their seige takes us down to 2 hives then we get screwed. Maybe the aliens need a spore type weapon with 2 hives to counteract this... ? (Pump spores up there, suffocate them and kill portals while they choke)

It's a vent, in the case of bast, on a STARSHIP. Do *you* know what's on the other side? Starships tend to be kinda reinforced...

It's easier than saying "you can't build here" and certainly lends itself to some interesting strategies...

As for 2 hives versus a vent job, well... acid rockets have splash damage. It's sort of a poor man's grenade launcher, so feel free to use it.

...and your assuming no one is up there with a welder? Splash = forever

OH, just so you know, you can't recycle siege turrets.

To counter the *building siege in vents* cheat and the *marine going in a vent* cheat, why don't you use the *acid rocket splash going through buildings to hit the guy welding them* cheat, followed up by the *lurk umbra blocking 75% of damage while shooting spines down the vent* cheat. Which leads quite nicely onto the *killing the siege and assaulting the marine base* cheat, which when combined with the *using your freaking common sense* cheat (which only works at 100fps) can ultimately enable the use of the *winning the damn game* cheat, which tends to be decisive.

Alternatively, why don't you cry me a river.

    I applaud and add..

*I lost a game this way so it must have been a cheat* cheat

Might as well say: Ignore everything I just said.

A week isn't enough time to fully grasp the game unless thats 168 hours of game time.

The rebuttal here is far too easy. Fades are not the end-all alien unit. Neither are Onos. These evolutions aren't meant to crawl around inside vents - vent areas are really meant for fast skulk and lerk travel. Since the marines do not have a class that can easily crawl through vents, there is the invention of the jetpack.

Siege in vents makes for some surprising strategies, and that's what this game is about. It's not cheating because you couldn't use your Fade to kill the structure. Get a lerk! Use those incredible alien evolutions and abilities to not only overcome but to also conquer.

The hitboxes are a bug that will probably always be there, since it is a Half Life problem (though I think Valve fixed it for Counter Strike).

They had a Comm, respawn, turrets, TF, seige, ect in the vents, or if you will a BASE. A pub server where only a few of the team is organized will have a hell of a time counteracting a vent camp, but now that seige needs to sight things somehow, it will not prove to be a problem. Also, don't give me these simple answers that you just assume will work like a flash. In such a cramped space a marine can easily knife a lerk attacking a building and if the lerk attacks the marine instead it will die to a turret, the same goes for the skulk. Sure it sounds simple enough but for us to win it took Fade boosting into vents, having skulks clear out the Nade launcher Marine, and then finnally, after an hour of extra game that should NOT have existed, the fades finnally blinked up there and got rid of the infantry portals... That was 1.3, 1.4 doesn't have this issue, but I still dislike cocky solutions that are in fact, not solutions at all...

Hmm... well i had a similar situation on bast as well. We had gotten 3 hives and has tootaly ahnillated there base. We were looking for the last guy hwo was hiding. They started to spanw, but hey werent in any normal area of the map. We were in a panic, and then engine room was under attack. We soon realized they were in the vents, and our fades leaped into the vents, and a bloddy battles ensued. they were winning the vents and puching into the hive. The only hting that saved us me going therough the other side and coming up behind them and eating em. However, wehn we got closer tho there base, we couldnt kill em!! They pushed ahead, and luckily we killed em as they came out and managed to take out there infantry portal, letting us win.
