Potentially Devastating Bug In Final 1.04

<div class="IPBDescription">Marine rifles stuttering</div> I tested this tonite on Coronas for a while and it seems that all marine LMGs will "stutter" shoot when they hit a target alien, most of the time I'd say probably 80 percent of the time, you'll see 5 bullets all hit at once. There were MANY MANY instant deaths when i was a skulk going up against marine LMG fire tonite and I then switched to marine team for another round, and realized my frustration was well founded. I killed a gorg with LMG no upgrades on my side and he had carapace in less than 1/2 of a second, it looked "instant" to everyone else in the game.

I don't know whats causing this, I never noticed it in beta builds of 1.04 - Don't write this off as some idiot newbie mistake, it IS there, weather it is caused by the final 1.04 or in fact a problem with the Coronas server is up for debate. I don't know which it is.

Flayra: Was the code that handles weapon reloading changed in any way that would affect the first few bullets in a fresh clip of ammo. It ONLY affects a fresh clip of ammo from what i can tell.

    probably heavy lag.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.. but I'd like to point towards the lag compensation most games allow, and the fact that lag does exist.

Otherwise this could be a serious issue. There's a bug forum if you know that it is a bug, y'know

Marines' fire has always sounded like it's stuttering to the aliens.

Even though they might be firing full auto, it sounds like they are burst firing.

It might be your connection... there was a packet flood on the 'net today by some **** virus exploiting mySQL servers... I was lagging like crazy and died many times.

    just a thought...

DSL ping was 60-100 like usual, mid 100s for a really busy mid game. Nothing out of the ordinary lagwise, but marine rifles are not acting like they normally do. I play marine and alien both on a regular basis and I know the stuttering sound, but its actually DOING it now, instead of just a sound you have a MASS of dead aliens at every encounter. I don't know what they changed, or who changed it. (flayra or tib, the CiS admin, but since tib doesn't mess with anything I'm inclined to think this is another bug in 1.04)

    1st.

Do you have any metamods, or HLguard or anything?

HlGuard can stutter the bites of aliens. Or at least that's what a majority of people have concluded.

Thats what we thought too at first, for about 1/3 of a second before I pointed out CiS does not run HL guard. I don't know of anything else it runs besides Adminmod of course.

I've noticed this as well. Has anyone seen this on a LAN?

I've noticed this from the alien stand point as well. Many a time I've been a fade with redemption(lv3), and suddenly I _die_ from a single lmg marine. Normily fades with redemption do not die from lmgs, even fully upgraded ones. I've always been redeamed with 80+ health when facing a lmg marine, unless there is something(one) else shooting me at the same time. Perhaps this is also behind that weird thing with redemption, where you get warped back to the hive only to die? It seems to like all the lmg damage is being applied at once, instead of each bullet being counted. Or then again it could be because I play on a modem with 400 ping. *Shrugs* Take your pick.

Just to point out, there is currently a worm attacking the Internet, any heavily-burdened servers could be playing havoc with your play experience if they're being pounded by the worm. You having a low-ping connection to the server means squat if it's busy rejecting a few dozen connection attempts every second.

No other lag characteristics were shown, AT ALL. Game was playing fine the entire day and I played for probably 8 hours that day, 5 specifically watching and trying to figure out where the bug was coming from.

I gotta say, I've noticed this in the past usually while attacking structures, but today I noticed it while attacking marines, I'm not totally convinced that the worm and this are just a happy coincidences but better safe then sorry, bump.

The obvious thing to do would be for someone with a handy LAN hanging around to check it out. Should probably disconnect it from the internet for the test too.

Either its lag or its skill either way it still fun. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Its a bug in ns.. i had it with skulk bite and lerk spike. I cannot say whats with the lmg, because i rarely play marines.

Chances are that all our 1.04 testing so far has been biased by the fact that its been nearly impossible to get any kind of 'clean' connection.

All worm writers should burn.... SLOWLY.

I mean viruses at least generally only mess up the stupid people's boxes <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I believe I have seen this happen as well. Very rarely does it happen to me as skulk, maybe once or twice, but this has happened may time when I'm fade going up against several marines. For example: I'm at full health and carapace going up against 2 la lmg marines, I kill one and now have 150 health and 100 armor( I don't fully recall how much armor I had, I think 100 is correct). The second marine reloaded his lmg while I was killing the other marine, then I face the other marine and in a spilt second I'm down to 60 health, I fall back and he finishes me off. Now I wasn't lagging; I was swiping them and had no interuption or bad connection.

I think I have had this happen to me before. I can only remember once that I killed a Skulk unusually quick. Paranoia? Hehe...

Should be looked into perhaps, I would dread to see this bug with a lvl 3 HMG. I run a AMD Athalon 2ghz, Geforce 4ti, 256 DDR RAM, Cable connection....I havent seen this happen much. My ping is normally in the 90-100 range. Of course I never really looked out for unsually quick deaths....

I've had things like that happen to me as a fade. I just evolved, got my upgrades and went after some marines. I found two, and before I get one acid rocket off, I'm dead.

VERY wierd bug. I don't know what causes it, but it happened to me last night. I ran into a room with two marines in it, and I literally only got one acid rocket off before I was dead. I had just left the hive so I had full health. I wish I knew wth I did that makes that happen, but it is REALLY annoying.

    Bursting?

I get that *all the time.* It's called lag. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> With a marine, what it results in is all of the rounds i fire "stacking up" inside of my lag, and then all getting dumped to the server at the same time... with an alien, the same thing happens for bites. It's mostly noticeable while shredding buildings.... i see my self firing or biting but the health stays the same, stays the same, stays the same... and then suddenly a *LARGE* amount of health gets dropped off the structure as my lag unwinds, and i'm back to biting normally again. Often times, this is accompanied by no real jump in my latency.

Read that slashdot article, folks... it's perfectly reasonable to assume that they're related.

Although it *IS* really amusing to see what the players who usually don't have to play with lag blame things on when it hits them...

Trust me. I get this kind of thing all the time (and it usually gets me killed). If it's <a href='http://slashdot.org/articles/03/01/25/1245206.shtml?tid=109' target='_blank'>worm</a> related, it would be a perfectly reasonable explanation for a bunch of other people suddenly seeing what i see all the time...

The worm is only for servers running Microsoft SQL, so if it is that then we would not be seeing this on Linux servers.
  • EmptyEmpty Join Date: 2003-01-25 Member: 12701Members
i think i was there, it's no bug, it's a good shot <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> i was also doing the stutter fire but it was lag. it was awol95's fault for the lag <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> and also throw meat at veggies was a very good shot if he was one of the guys who kept killing you.

The fact that the worm only AFFECTS MS SQL server means nothing. Any server infected with it randomly throws out 374 byte packets at random IPs SEARCHING for other MS SQL servers to infect. So even if your server runs Linux and can't be INFECTED by the worm, it's sure being lagged by the bajillion packets being randomly hurled at it looking for an MS SQL server that doesn't exist.
