The Caretaker

backbone of the marines
Every good marine team needs a caretaker.
Who is the caretaker? It's that guy that's looking out for the team's investments.
A typical caretaker jumps through the phase gates repeatedly, stopping at each outpost for a few minutes to monitor for aliens and weld damaged equipment. Caretakers alert the team of attacking aliens before it's too late to recover an outpost.
Typically caretakers carry a shotgun or a grenade launcher to keep aliens at bay and make them think first before attacking.
Caretakers are always the marines that stay at base in the beginning to build stuff the rambos left undone.
Caretakers don't build new outposts because 80% of the team is doing that already. No, caretakers instead keep close watch on the areas that are already secured. If there's no secured outposts, they stay at base, building turrets and mining the cc.
But if there are abandoned outposts out there in need of company, the caretaker is there to blast that long-range lerk or that tf-munching skulk and dispatch that gorge before he infests the area with too many OCs.
It's not always the most exciting job, but somebodys gotta do it.

I pick a random person at the start of the round and ask them if they wouldn't mind helping me out a lot throughout the entire game. Usually, I can find at least one person to do it with no problem.
And you're damn right they're the first to get whatever they want.
EDIT: Don't let a noob do it. It may seem beneficial to show them what buildings are what, how to use phase gates for quick mobility, and how to repair things since they're not going to be too great at combat. At the same time, though, it's hurting them because they're going to learn to play independently, instead of with the team. And that's MUCH more important than firing accurately.
Second Point: I do this every game, and am never rewarded, except for Team Two Wins.

If everyone did this, you would never advance, and never take any Hives. It's smart to leave one guy behind to keep an eye on everything while everyone else moves out.
But that pretty much goes for any marine who follows orders, since giving away 2 resrouces for a health pack is no great loss if that marine follows orders, and helps you grab and hold hives/RT's/main.. (that is kind of the idea of the game, when directly killing the aliens only hive is not an option)
Bottom line, players who help me win when I comm (I have never once won a game, the marines always win them, i just help them do it), get anything they require when resources allow...
Awwwww....

naw everyone shouldn't do this. like flatline said, if everyone did this, your team would never advance. only do it if theres not already someone doing it.
Although this one time on Eclipse, I had this idiot clanner screaming at me and the com that we needed turrets in the base at all cost, despite the fact that the assault force was meeting heavy resistance (meaning that's where the skulks were), and the one skulk who did come along all the time, I killed 4 times out of 5 (the fifth time, this idiot was jumping in front of me, trying to get me to leave. Thankfully, someone else had just spawned and got the skulk just after I died). We won BTW, because the com had the resources required to lock down the hives.
He is called the GREASEMONKEY !!!!!

IMO, that just sound soooo much better than handyman!
Fear the welder-weilder.
"Man... this place is dead... Where's the party?"
I keep the command updates of all alien activity i see going on, and of the free resource points.
I'm the person who stays behind at the new hive location you've secured to make sure everything is extra secure and call in for more turrets to make sure things are extra tight.
Marines who do these jobs are the back bones of the team...it makes the commanders job much easier so he can concentrate on ohter thinsg.

Caretaker - The Most Boring Job Ever. Your guarding a base in some "Nevada Desert"-like location while others are kicking skulk a*s at the last hive. How fair... _It_ (meaning the machine-like "caretaker") is needed, but don't ask me for the job! I really sigh out loud when I stumble upon a base that has no marines nearby (they all left for a fight), an unfinished phasegate, unfinished 3-5 sentries, a half-done siege and a completed armory (woohoo!). I just can't bring myself to leave those buildings alone and go search for enemies. I wish I could though.
That's all I've got to say about "caretakers"

My personal favourite is 'PlayerName'
I Don't call them anything just say: You base def!
They should generally have a GL.
Assuming the com hasn't foolishly built somewhere with LONG fields of fire (eg anywhere in great viaduct hive) A GL can stop that lurk and make him flee till someone with a pistol turns up and kills the sod.
If a large skulk rush happens he can GL spam the buildings and then phase out.
If anythings hiding in a vent he can GL spam it.
Any serious attack on the base he can just phase out and let the turrets take it then come back and weald the turrets up to full.
Any gorge who attempts to build into the base when someone has a GL in there is in for a shock

Hmm if its so boring why not allow the the aliens to get 2/3 hives and wait at base, those fades and onii will certainly mean you have an interesting time.
To be honest if you don't
-have any patience
-wish to be as helpful as possible to your team
-be unselfish
you shouldn't really play NS (I don't see why you'd want to). The 'I won't do that, but others should' attitude is a big problem in NS on public servers.
ALSO
I don't get this whole "you don't need to know how to shoot" bit.
If you don't fire accurately, you don't kill attacking aliens. If you don't kill attacking aliens you get murdered. If you get murdered those aliens are free to rampage the area that you were supposed to be defending. You get where this goes.
Yes team play is very important but don't discredit good aim to put team play in its place. A whole team full of people who can't aim for their life will lose 10 out of 10 times, just because they cannot kill oncoming threats no matter how well they work together. Granted a team full of greatly aimed Rambo's isn't going to come out with a win every time either, but they're more likely to win it.
The fact of the matter is that you need both, and you need to get used to both. You can't expect to have either/or within a couple pubs of play.
