Ns Language

greyfox5greyfox5 Join Date: 2002-02-14 Member: 217Members
The language I am hearing ingame in NS is disturbing me a little. For example.

Nub, nubble, nubie. This seems a spinoff of n00b, Noob, noobie.
Stop it. Just stop. People dont deserve to be yelled at and be called a noobie, or nub, or any other name. People sometimes try and break people down, by yelling and insulting them, to try and make them better. Well some people dont just learn that way ****. Be polite for once and try and explain things to new players FFS.

There are newbies and then there are n00bs. There is a big difference. I would bend over backward to help a newbie; n00bs can burn in hell.

Newbie: Someone who is willing to learn and acknoledges that they are new. Newbie is a broad term, however. Newbies can also be people that make an attempt to learn the game before playing in a public server, such as by hosting a LAN game and playing alone, or reading the slideshow tutorial.

N00b: Someone who is new, and has made no attempt to learn, and believes that they know better then anyone else at how to become good at the game. I wish you could reach through the monitor and strangle these people.

I have a superb image of an alien sitting in some hive corner sulking about those n00b marines and their siege guns!

Weilder? What the guy that weilds the WELDER

I hate people who can't use English well (Unless it's a 2nd language. In that case I don't mind because I'm sure my German is pants!)

I think its spelled wield, not weild... lemme check.
Ah yes; <a href='http://www.dictionary.com' target='_blank'>http://www.dictionary.com</a> gives these results:
    <a href='http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=weild' target='_blank'>http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=weild</a>
    <a href='http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=wield' target='_blank'>http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=wield</a>
Anyways. Yes. What everyone else has already said.
n00bs in my opinion are any person that misbehaves over a certain extent.

whatever happened to just being a jerk or idiot

n00b or whatever is som much cs-community imo and i dont think we need that in here

i rather have only new players then lots of people that goes on about noob this and noob that

as for some of theese misspelllings: some of us are not native english speakers and when i type fast i misspell even in swedish that is my native tounge
in gmae this is easil forgivable as so long as someone understand what you mean the message gets throufgh and that is the important part

wheter its a faed or a fade up in that went straight ahead does it really matter?

Not an NS language peeve, but a general reality one: It's only ever pluralised with +i if it (a) has its roots in Latin (so that rules NS out) and (b) ends in -us (so that rules on<u>os</u> out, too)

It's like people who insist it's hippopotami instead of hippopotamuses. So annoying.

Me and my mates tend to refer to the Gorge as "George", one of the characters from the infinitely disturbing childrens TV show of yesteryear "Rainbow", or just "Fatteh"

I have no problem with non-english types (Except you bloody yanks, obviously <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->) but in a game where good comunication is second to non, please do not join UK servers if you do not speak usable english.

Ok, I just realised exactly how pointless posting that was...

LOL - as if you can cite authoritatively on the plural form of a made-up word.

In the english language, forms are established by usage. If usage dictates that the plural of onos is onage, for example, then that's what it is. Furthermore, regional differences are also supported. By the way, one of my degrees is a BA in English Literature (with Honours, of course.)

Did that include a linguisics section dealing with prescreptive versus descriptive grammar, by any chance? lol@the guy who couldn't understand what the heini's were saying. One of my most treasured experiences was, while playing CS on a german pub, an American joins the game. He immiedately(sp?) starts complaining since noone(sp?) wrote or talked in english there. He eventually screamed "what are you guys doing? If you wanna talk German go play on a German server!"

At this comment, we politely told him to press tab, and read closer. I don't know if he got the chance, as he "disappeared" shortly afterwards.

As for language, it is physically painful to hardcore NS players to see a n00b. Newbs generally mean someone will follow you, learn the map, etc. a N00b runs off, dies, alerts all of the aliens to a secret marine advance, etc.

Comedic however, is the fact that an Oni is a demonic thing, harbinger of luck (good or <b>BAD</b>, in the case of NS) in Japanese culture.

(note : No, I am not an expert in Japanese culture. I have an avid interest, that is all. I may be wrong. Please don't sulk at me, I won't care.) <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Funny, BlueGhost has seen me as Gorge turn around & charge the marine with spray, while spamming

    <b>"DON'T P*SS OFF THE GORGE! DON'T MAKE HIM ANGRY!"</b>

    And win. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
