I realize this probably doesn't fit the definition of 'online' very accurately, but my first "not-local multiplayer" experience was Warcraft. Yes, the first one. I had a 386/40, and a friend of mine had a beasty 486/66.

We'd stay on the phone for hours at a time, at least until someone picked up another phone and they'd get a screaming modem in response. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Technically, I'm pretty sure that Science and Industry was the first time I went on an on-line server. However, if you count LAN's, then it goes way back to either Heretic or DOOM when I played against my best friend. Not to mention the "huge" 6-player Marathon 2 deathmatches that I played a quite a few years back.

    I guess a MUD would count as a online experince... even before DOOM <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Doom was my first.

I remember wanting to play that game SO bad, but my dad was always on playing it. So I had the great of idea of waking up at like 2 AM, which was WAAAY past my bedtime when I was 8. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> I snuck down to the basement to try and play Doom, and my dad was STILL down there playing. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
    .
After he beat it he stopped playing, so I had plenty of time to play it

Command and Conquer for multiplayer. As well as an old turn based simulation called Front Lines.

    My ancientness is almost respectable.

You're all n00bs! ^_^ Except Comrpox, Rhoads, and Paq. :P

My first online game was LORD (Legend Of the Red Dragon), but if you aren't counting MUDs, then it'd be DOOM. Sadly, I never got to use DWANGO (nearest access number was in Dallas Tx, and noway can I pay long distance from Oklahoma City just for that), but instead there was a local BBS that had software that emulated an IPX/SPX network, so you could play 4 player DOOM over a modem.

I still remember how **** people were when I hopped in w/ my 2400 baud modem and everybody's game went to pot. (You see, back then the connection was syncronious, which means your entire game was only as fast as the slowest person. And you didn't have lag, the game time actually slowed down...) :P

OOOOHHhh... I remember DWANGO. I live in Dallas now, but unfortunately I lived in Maryland during DWANGO's heyday.

Avara was the first game I played over my 14.4 modem connected to the Internet. Otherwise, Warcraft over phone lines (against my brother upstairs) was my first phone-line game. and before that, I think tron was the first game I played via serial cable. You would ride around on a "bike" making lines so that your enemy couldn't go there, and you had 3 "missiles" or something that created a block of lines in front of you. *shrug*

    Avara's still around, dunno about Warcraft. <a href='http://www.ambrosiasw.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.ambrosiasw.com/</a>

sorry don't wanna try to get the tag to work, and I don't remember the html one.

I remember Rise of the Triads... wasn't it just another Doom clone (it looked and felt like one, at least. It might have had a storyline, though).

My first multi-player gaming experience was when my school IT department decided to have a massive Quake 2 LAN party. That rocked... I came third with five hundred or so frags.

I had the internet at the time, but I couldn't use it much (only one phone line, other people constantly making calls, that sort of thing). I only really started playing over the internet when I got broadband.

Counter strike on a LAN about a year ago, TFC on the I-net about 8 months ago.

And despite this I've had a computer for over four years...........
