Urbanmap
Ok I would hereby like to announce that I have started on a urban-environment natural selection map. I still need an experienced mapper to actually construct it though so if youre interested shout me a holla please and we can work on it together, I have many good ideas that I believe will make this map something special. I still havent completed the layout only different sections that Im not sure how to glue together. Ive made some sketches that Im gonna post as soon as my computer is back. As it looks now the hives will be 1. sewer 2. ruined building 3. subway. Marinebase will be inside a large dropship, blocking a road.

Heres the story(I hope it works with the official ns-storyline otherwise I can change it). A long time ago an entire metropolis on earth was evacuated and classified as a restricted area along with a large territory around it because of a disease like the black plague, only worse that kileld amny thousands. However, homeless people, mutants and other rejects afterwards moved into this ghostcity. There has been rumors of monsters living there for a long time and people disappering but it wasnt until recently that the government decided to investigate and sent in a group of soldiers and scientists that was killed. Before they were killed however, they confirmed that the creatures where indeed kharaa. This caused an uproar among the population. Until now most of the public havent even been aware of the kharaa and now they appear in their own backyard! The first step was to bomb the area with nervegas, but this didnt seem to have any effect(except killing all the homeless people). Then they thought about destroying the entire city with bombs but many people protested and said that the city was a cultural treasure and that it should be saved. So now they have decided to send in thousands of dropships and marines and root the hives out, one by one. The problem is however that they have to be sure that the plague isnt still around, so many sectors are still shut, awaiting investigation(this will make it easier to explain why paths are blocked to the marines.

Here are three questions. Can trains work in ns?
I was thinking of having a moveable subway train(only a short distance)

Can you add models like the ghost in de_vegas?
I was thinking of having ghosts with short animations that appear every now and then(like system shock2). former citizens dying of the plague

Is the mapname in use yet?

Y'know, it really doesn't take that long to learn some basic mapping skills..probably less time than it takes you to come up with all these map concepts. You should be able to knock out a few basic rooms within the first few days...

I would imagine most of the "experienced Mappers" will be busy trying out their own map concepts...

Well thats my only chance, unless Im gonna make it myself then it will be finished in 2005. Btw I dont think there will be any basic rooms at all.

Na, I had a fairly large complex of ( admittedly, very ugly) rooms and corridors knocked out within a few weeks. Basic lighting done, sliding doors, working comm mode, minimaps and a couple of rubbishy steam effects. Just use the tutorials at VERC and whatnot. I never did anything worth releasing, but still, it's not that hard to grasp the basics of it..

As for "basic rooms", in my limited experience, they all start out as "basic rooms", then you gradually reshape it, add details, architecture, lighting etc, transforming it into "slightly more interesting room".

Honestly, it's gonna be a lot quicker in the long run to just learn how to do it yourself. Besides, you'll develop an understanding of what can and can't be done in the HL engine, knowledge which will be very helpful when you come up with future concepts for maps.

Your alternative is to hang around here hoping that experienced mappers ( who I assume will mostly have a limited amount of available "mapping time") are willing to drop their personal projects to work unpaid on someone elses...

the idea sounds... interesting, but I'm not quite sure why so many people who can't map are flooding this place, meh at least it gives a nice pool to dig from, perhaps someone should compile all the ideas into one handy site, so you can just go there and get like insperations and such...

Bitmap do us all a favour and take a long walk off a short cliff. You're "comments" are neither helpful nor constructive to new mappers or even mapping in general.

    Be nice or shut up.

are you posting one map idea per day?

Wow ^Requiem^ that was also real helpful.

How about you two leave your petty squabbles to private messages or totallly alone?

You never know, you do find the odd decent idea dropped in here which can be implemented to a map.

I agree with Mr.Ben... that wasn't exactly 'being nice' either, requiem, so take your own advice and hush.

I also agree that the 'non-mapper' visitors, at times, have good ideas. I also agree that we should be encouraging them to learn to map... as long as they don't come to this forum with n00bie questions (how do I make a door, the map doesn't work, etc etc etc etc) that's what all those valve-erc sites and stuff are for... this forum is for NS Mappers, not people learning to map for the HL engine. New ideas and semi-experienced mappers are welcome, otherwise find your answers elsewhere. And READ THE FAQ's... they may be horribly, terribly, obscenely out-of-date, but they're still useful. Oh yes, one last thing: Be happy!

    That is all.

    A map doesn't work isn't always a noobie question...!

I gotta agree a bit with Bitmap.
Since NS came out and people started getting sick of the maps, tons and tons of people are trying to learn how to map themselves and topics like these are swarming the forums.
In the modeling forum, it's the same thing.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but come on. NS mapping is a couple of notches above another other form of HL mapping. The official NS mappers have years of experience and have created great, beautiful maps. But NS mapping is hard. It's not just a matter of placing brushes and tweaking entities. It's about game flow and layout and atmosphere and ton of other factors. Such things can't be acheived with an overnight read of a couple of tutorials online.

I know some of you will undoubtedly go around my warning and try and learn. Good for you! I encourage it! But... plz don't try and take the apple from the last branch of the tree when there are much easier apples to pick from.
Start small and work your way up. If you thing you can simply think of an idea and make the next de_dust (In terms of success).. im sorry but you're setting yourself up for failure.

Just letting you know, my first map ever (ns_trane) is a natural selection map. The thing I think you have to worry about tho is just the positioning and layout of the rooms. Just learn room by room how to actually make things work. I find myself going back and re-doing some of the earlier rooms I did and I have found that I have gotten better quite quickly.
So give it a try before you ask someone.

Hesit I am also doing my first map. Although I find the positioning of rooms very easy, I find doing elaborate walls and multi-elevated floors (Like the Maintenance Hive In Ns_Eclipse 1.0) very easy. Although when it coes to ceilings, im on a lower plain of mapping. Never mind, one day I will make nice ceilings

    1. I have seen trains work in NS! See this map here.

    2. About the models thing, I'd guess you could, but this would need to be confirmed by an actual mapper.

    3. I have not seen a map by this name.

As far as the storyline goes, the storyline indicates that NS occurs out in the outer rim, meaning far away from earth.

Well first of all Half-Life has trains in it. Therefore by default they should work NS.

Even at that - what's a train? Just an elevator that moves horizontally :-P

So, yes, to answer your question. Then again I'm no NS mapping expert so you tell me :-)

You can have a moveable train in NS, it works but you have to be careful how you do it.

The only reason I ever speak out against bitmap is because he never puts out good ideas on the forums, he always speaks from a position as if he is better than everyone else here, and he flames anyone whom he perceives to be beneath his own ego inflated mapping ability. Its not helping anyone, especially new mappers.

i like the ideas of spreading out ns maps to wider areas, but tbh, ideas like this wouldnt get made 'official' but if good enough im sure someone would place it on a custom maps server.

and i think having these so called 'n00bs' come in here and give us ideas is great. even if someone cant map, they can still inspire even the best of mappers.

Besides its all relative, me and you are newbies compared to people like KFS and Greedo who are the pros of this type of work, and people who just come on and ask how to map are newbies to us, but that doesn't make us any less important to NS mapping than greedo and KFS or the beginners any less important than me and you. We're all trying to help the community, so lets all cut out the bad attitudes.

The problem with func_trains online is that they are very prone to lag and can react weirdly due to it.
As well as problems with getting stuck in them, and building structures to block them (Like blocking the quad lift in ns_nothing with a "tower" of offense chambers.
  • Justin_CaseJustin_Case Join Date: 2002-08-08 Member: 1114Members
Oki thx for replies guys. First I would like to point out that if someone decides to help me it will be a cooperative map. I am open to ideas and like i said I havent even finished the overview yet. A lot of the fun would be to discuss ideas and rooms together. I would like it to say idea and design: Justin Case and creator and design: (the mapper) in the readme. I am not a mapper, however I have played halflife from day one, and downloaded loads of single player maps, Ive played counterstrike from almost day one and downloaded tons of custom maps, same thing with dod and Ive played natural selection from day one. Ive also played many other halflife mods. I have also played around a bit with hammer and picked up a lot of knowledge at forums of what can and cant be done.

Anyway, about the trains, is it possible to make it impossible to build stuff on the rail so it cant be blocked?

Im sorry for lack of pics, I have a lot to do and my computer is still broken,

And for those of you that seem to think I post 3 mapconcept ideas a day. You are wrong. Ive posted 4-5 ideas I think in 2 months(or maybe 3). I dont think that is excessive do you? I have posted this idea before but it was so old that it had disappeared.
