Help! Cant Validate Won Id?

<div class="IPBDescription">Need help with WON ID problem</div> I was playing a game of NS a few days ago when it suddenly crashed out to desktop, just like Id exited the program ( only I didnt ). Now, I cant log into ANY server. When it tries to connect, I get a message saying my WON ID could not be verified. Its two days later and Im getting the same error. What can I do?

Your WON ID affects more than just NS, it's important to connecting to multiplayer for almost any HL mod.
I can think of two possibilities: either your WON ID is banned for whatever reasons (kinda drastic, I've never heard of it happening except to chronic cheaters or hackers who try to take down entire servers) or someone is using your WON ID.

Because it's somewhat associated with your CD key and whether anyone's using the same one as you, I'd suggest contacting official tech support regarding CD key issues--there's a chance a software pirate put a random CD key and/or altered his WON ID (I beleive it's in the registry) to a random # hoping for it to work, and came up with the same one as you by accident. If you suspect that's the case, try logging on to servers at VERY different times of day; if they're in a different time zone, they have to sleep sooner or later. If after all this you're fairly confident that someone did in fact start using the same WON ID as you, report the fool.

i seriously doubt someone has your key

what happens is when your game crashes it keeps your wonid as logged in
on the main won server

so you cant get back in with it

what i do is i change my hlproxy to a different won server till the dns entry
or what ever it is at won clears and i can use it again

solution: wait, it will come back that is all

How do I change my proxy? Its been about 2 days going on 3 now with no luck so far. Can I change this proxy thing and get validation through WON? If so, how do I do this? Thanks!

Try editing your HOSTS file (for Win9x/ME it's in %WINDOWS%\HOSTS ; for W2k/XP it's in %WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS) to point to only one of the three WON servers. For example, I get the best ping to half-life.west.won.net, so I've set it as the 'only' WON server, and my HOSTS file looks like this:

The IPs for the different servers are 198.74.33.52, 198.74.33.53, 198.74.33.62, for east, central, and west, respectively. Change the IP on each of the three lines, save the file, and retry your connection. If/when you find a server that works, just leave the file as-is.

OK, I waited a few days, and today I was able to play. Then, tonight, it crashed out AGAIN and I have the same problem. I cant log on to any games because it says my WON ID cannot be verified. I dont know what has brought this on, this just started a few days ago, but its very irritating. I tried editing the HOSTS file in C:\WINDOWS\hosts.sam but it makes no mention of any Half-Life servers in it. Adding the HL servers in changed nothing. I still cannot get online, is this a bug or something I can fix? Can ANYone help? I only get a few hours a week to play on the PC and this is drivingme nuts. Thanks.

First of all, I'd suggest finding out why HL/NS keeps crashing on you. Try a full HL/NS reinstall, then try joining a game.

It's possible that it's the 'duplicate CD key' thing, but I doubt it. It's more likely that your WONID is being flagged for some reason due to the crashes.

If it automagically fixes itself (<i>ie: flag expires</i>) and lets you get into a game to play, great. It's not so great if the game crashes on you again, causing the same problem just about every other time you play.

try typing "getcertificate" in console, that works most of the time.

i am getting the exact problem..can anyone think of a way to stop this madness???
