Where do I find Kyanite again? I know I have to mine it, but from what? I see the round glowing things that your scanner won't read is that it?

Never been there meself, but I believe Kyanite is down in the Inactive Lava Zone in large deposits. You'll need the PRAWN suit with its drill arm.

The last time I saw kyanite, I had just begun the descent from the Lost River Tree Cove to the Inactive Lava Zone.

Kyanite is all over the Lava Zones. And yes, you'll need a Prawn with the drill arm and the max depth upgrade to get to it. You /can/ go down there and back with just your Prawn, if you pack enough food and water and such, but it's uh, an adventure.

Kyanite appears as a blue crystal deposits all around the inactive lava zone and very few in the active lava zone

Since this thread has been resurrected I have a question about Kyanite:

When I mine it using the Prawn I only get 3 or 4 resources worth. Whereas when I mine things like Quartz, Gold, Silver, etc. I usually get 10 or so. Is this working as intended?

Yes, depending on what you mine will give you different outputs

Great to have you here, @DanielleLittle25! We're largely a very friendly bunch, so never hesitate to ask questions or bring something up. How are you finding Subnautica so far?

(Just try to avoid the two subjects that are wired directly to the community Berserk Button: lethal weapons and multiplayer. Both have been rehashed so many times that most folks have nearly an allergic reaction when they see thread titles on those lines. Nobody should be mean about it, but it's well-worn ground.)

Kyanite appears in the Inactive Lava Zone and the Lava Lakes areas. Look for longer, spiky crystals that, depending on the ambient light, can look radiant blue to blue-white (around active, glowing lava). Here's what you're looking for:
    latest?cb=20180129041857
    latest?cb=20180129042226

There's also a short and a long deposit type for kyanite, and the long type is capable of giving nearly twice the pieces of the short.

You can get full details on Kyanite on the wiki.

As for the Large Resource Deposits, the amount each yields is randomly chosen for each deposit within a range fixed based on the material in question:
    Copper: 8-16
    Gold: 9-18
Kyanite: Short deposit, 0-12; Tall deposit, 0-22
    Lead: 8-16
    Lithium: 8-16
    Magnetite: 7-14
    Nickel: 8-16
    Quartz: 7-14
    Salt: 7-14
    Silver: 9-18
    Titanium: 8-16
    Uraninite: 7-14

    Happy mining, all! :)

It feels like it is better to just ditch the PRAWN suit and get the Kyanite from the tunnel between the Inactive Lava Zone and Thermal Plant.

I never go there without a PRAWN suit anyway.

One donut to rule them all. One donut to bribe them.
One donut to bring them all and in hunger bind them
in the shadow where the dark lord sits on his dark throne
in the land of mordor where the pastries lie on the floor for more than five seconds and become ruined
