Is the crater the void?

So I am not finished yet and am trying to avoid spoilers but is the giant 2x2 km crater what everyone refers to as the void?

I started going down a sheer cliff into seemingly nothingness and my Seamoth started questioning my actions.

"There is nothing down there but leviathians, are you really sure you want to do this?"

The geological data it gave me made me think the 'lava zone' is at the bottom (becuase I still haven't found that yet).

I was able to hold my PRAWN together long enough to walk around the bottom. There is nothing but rock spikes as far as I could tell.

The "void" is outside the crater, where the water gets this distinctive dark blue tint (so you know you're leaving the "game map").

At least it is better than some invisible wall that other games use to define their boundary.
