Not funny.
From time to time in the forums we take a moment to give a poke in the ribs to our friends in the North. But the other night at an NBA game, some Americans decided to give our neighbors a poke in the eye. They took it upon themselves to boo the Canadian national anthem and at the same time disgraced those of us who proudly call ourselves Americans. I don't know if this is a national story but because I live in Michigan, which borders Canada, I've been hearing discussions about it all day.

I just want to personally apologize for the idiots who live South of the border. Unfortunately, I'm hearing this isn't the only occurance. I can't believe something like this could happen when Canadians have just buried a handful of soldiers who died from American friendly fire in the Middle East.

I'm a sports fan too but a country's national anthem, and flag for that matter, deserve all the respect we would give our own.

Agreed. Fooling around and making little jokes can be fun and acceptable if done appropriately and taken lightly... but there is certainly such thing as going overboard. Which sounds like the case here.

I haven't heard a thing about this, or any pervious occurances, but yeah... that is suckage. Especially what has apparently been said about those soldiers. Makes me sick.

Fortunately these boards are run by civilized Americans (and Canadians, for that matter) so I think that anyone coming voicing such cruel, ignorant sentiments would have their account locked and IP banned in a heartbeat.

Truly an enormous shame about those soldiers, too.

For the most part, the people who boo during another nation's national anthem are the same idiots that can be seen every week on cops-- as described by David Spade:'shirt off, lazy boy, dolphin shorts, one sock, flip flop, cig, dog yappin', baby cryin', tv on the fuzz, NOT surprised there's a cop in their house . . .'

(God, I love that description . . . )

A bunch of Canadians were bombed in Afghanistan by Americans. Some.... I think Americans booed Canadians at a hockey game (or something like that). Or moreso than usual. Dunno exactly. I haven't watched the news in about three or six months. Didn't even know about bombing thing till someone told me online.

Americans and Canadians are like belgian and dutch people, they never seem to get along, though the Americans are so damn patriotic that it's even worse then our "problems".
Just watch a WCW (WWF now?) wrestling match between that canadian guy wich song is the canadian anthem, they always boo him, and he always loses too (wrestling is so fake )
Is there any historical background for these problems anyway ?

As a way of apology, I think they played the Canadian National Anthem instead of the American one. And fans booed.

What's sad is, I'm sure the announcer made note of it... and the fans still booed. Jack@sses.

Actually, it was a basketball game between Detroit and Toronto. As I'm not a big b-ball fan I wasn't even aware that there was an NBA team in Toronto. There seems to be a bit of confusion here as to what actually happened. Here's a link to a story that explains things a bit better than I can - Read this

I'm not aware of any of these "problems" that you speak of but I think generally Canadians and Americans think of each other as cousins. We're in the same family but we only get together on special occasions if you know what I mean. That's also why we can get away with poking fun at each other. But this story is an example of what NOT to do.

The term American refers to everyone who lives in the North and South American continents. Be specific.

Absolutely agreed. It's completely foolish and insulting to other american citizens to boo at any one elses national anthem. Canada and America have been partners in everything for a long time, including the Military. Canada is in afghanistan with america because Canada and America are partners, we work togehter to achieve common goals. It's insulting to know that anyone of the same nationality as yourself would say something like "They deserved to be bombed for getting in the way of the americans". 'Getting in the way' is another thing that annoys me. We are no-where near getting in the way. America currently has, I believe, aproxomitly 3500 units stations in the middle east. Canada has somewhere between 1500-2000, I do not call that getting in the way. I read in the news that Canadians even politly appluaded after the American national anthem. If us two countries didn't have each other we wouldn't be where we are : Some of the most powerful and rich countries in the world, partners for years, and imagine, citizens still booing at the sound of the other countries national anthem. Sickens me.

Go Canada
And U.S.A

I Love Canada..I used to crack a lot of jokes about them..

Then I found out they had a battleship..
I scoffed, I insulted them more..

Then Comprox told me they had snipers in Afghanistan.
I fell in love with Canada.

Snipers= l33t
Canada= Snipers
Thus...
Canadia=Snipers=L33t.

Which can therefore be shortened to:
Canada=L33t

canadian sniper hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm snipers hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

but not all americans are bad but it still confuses me why they would boo the canadian athem and it was a American on a forum that said it was our fault and how we got in the way and deserved to get bombed.

the human race isn't perfect but i would think that we have some class and respect each other i guess i was wrong.

i guess BOB should come and eat us all now because we'll just kill each other down the road SAD REALLY

Well I'd like to thank you for offering your apologies for the immature behaviour that occured in the Detroit Stadium. The sad thing is, it happened again recently. During the 3rd playoff game in the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. NY Islanders series, the Canadian National Anthem was booed. The booing continued right through to the end of the song. It reached a climax where the singer sang his loudest. I really respect that man. Imagine what must have been running through his head during those few moments, under what must have felt to be the hate of the entire stadium pressing down upon him. I for one am quite saddened by this whole business, and I must admit that I was quiet angry as well.

The good thing is that I believe it when you guys say that you do not all feel this way. I hope that those who would express their emotions so openly and vehemently for seemingly irrational reasons are few, while you are many. I for one pray for the continued unity and freidnship between both nations, for now, and for all time.

I'll have everybody here know that Canadian snipers are the BEST troop out of the WHOLE ####### WORLD. And I'm not just being patriotic here, eitha. It's bloody well true. Also, Canadians and Americans are both british (Mainly), however, Canada's ancestors were loyal to Britain, while America revolted. It makes me sick, but our government still sends around 1 million dollars to the British government each year. Funny, no? Personally, I respect Americans. Until they give me reason to do otherwise. Whereas I proceed to pound their head in. :-Þ

Hellocke, Canadians, and Unites Statesians our like brothers... we fight all the time, poke fun at each other, but in the end, we're still family. The Canadian military members I've met up here (Alaskan Arctic Flight training), have all been courteous to everyone.

Indeed monkey said it best - what makes me upset is that everyone is so focused on these four deaths. War - a three letter word that means death, and only death. In war death occurs so it should not be that big of a shock to anyone. How many people do you think died of friendly fire in WW1, WW2, and Nam. Alot. We didn't make that big of a fuss over it then and I just dont see why we have to make that big of a fuss over it now. Also, why would the americans be booing the canadians? If anything, shounlt they boo us?

Sports + Alcohol = a
a - inhibition = b
b = The state of mind of the people booing.
