Getting Respect As Comm

How do I...
im fairly new to commanding, but i have learned what to do and how to do it...im just slow

and everygame except my first game, half my team ignores my orders and runs all over the map and they just screw around

the other half respects me, but they also demand help

just recently i had a game where i captured a hive, was trying to reinforce it (tf, 2 turrets, phase) and they were begging for more and then whined when i put it in the "wrong spot"...and i gave the other two marines a wp to the other hive (i forgot the name of the map)...and they just kept taking the longest way possible and kept dying (never once saying they couldnt reach the wp cause of obstructions)

finially everyone got fed up and said "this comm sucks! get out! we need a real comm!"....i had captured one hive (albeit weakly), was starting to tech up, and was looking for more res, they just wouldnt help me get the job done....

i guess my question is how do i get their respect....my first game i won because my team worked together...built the buildings and went to the wp's...and just waited while i learned the interface, even though i accidentally forgot someone and he stayed put for 5 minutes bored (i guess it helped that my really good friend was playing as a grunt)

anymore it seems the squad controls me and wont do what i want if its not what they want

any input would be welcome, thx

A commander is worthless without marines, just as marines are worthless without a commander.

If you're doing your job, and your team is screwing around, it's their fault. Don't let it get to you. I suggest you find a nice group of players on a server you like and stick with em. That way you'll always have the fullest enjoyment.

Give the marines WPs the way you want them to go, they may not know the map nor exactly which room the WP is in, on some maps this can make a big difference to the path you want to take... if you dont have a mige get one this is the most important thin kyou can do to getting your marines trust, If they can here you giveing orders they know you are there.

Unless you TF is in a really secure position 3 turrets is a must, and I prefer 4. ensure that the turrets can see all sides of the TF.. listen to marines about Turret placement.

I like the following turret placements

    ----------

If you only have 1/2 the marines listening to you tell the rambos to find the gorge, (give them your best bet as to where it is) and then get teh other to build the base.

These things works to me when iam com. If you put your wp very far marines may not know how to get there, so give first wp about like 30m away and when they get there give new wp a little further and so on until they get there where did you wanted them.

If my team is full of rambos who doesn't do what i told them to do i give you a few tips how to solve this "problem". Select a marine and them give him a wp and if he ignores you start give wp in that position like mad (right click around that area where you want him to go), sometimes they goes there then. You can always use your chat option. I usually type like: MOVE TO WP YOU F*CKING A**HOLE !!!! There is three things what may happen then:

    1. They ejects you
    2. They just types SUYF and keeps ramboing
    3. They may actually do what you wanted them to do !

    Edit:
Sorry about my bad english skills... i hope you undestand what i am trying to tell you

The best way to gain respect as a com is to be a good com. As long as my commander knows what he is doing and seems like he is smart and prompt in the chair, I have no problems with him. However, I detest:

    1. Bad turret placement. I don't want our team to lose a mini simply because our commander couldn't figure out how turrets function. Read my turret guide at www.planetns.com.

    2. Doesn't get arms lab upgrades, even level 1. Doesn't make sense. Even if the commander is apparently in the area and not doing anything, he still won't click the upgrade button. It takes just a moment. Level 1 weapons and armor only cost a total of 40 RPs and are quick to research, but greatly increase marine survival rates.

    3. Expands slowly or not at all. If I spead all my time standing around, the commander should be doing somthing. While this is understandable if we have outposts over the whole map (I've commanded before), if we currently are at a standstill in base with one node, the chair should really be doing somthing about it.

I have no problem with beginner commanders, as long as they are willing to learn and make it clear that they are new. However, make sure you let me know so I don't get irritated if you make a mistake, we all do stupid things at first.

There really is no 'best' way to get the marines to respect you other than a win. However you can increase the odds that they listen to you. First have voice comm, that is a must for speedy order giving, I've won without using it (when the family is all asleep) but it is a h3ll of a lot harder when you don't have it. Tell them at the start that those who listen and help get the goodies first. During the game ASK the marines what they would like, motion track right off or weapons upgrades, jet packs or heavy armor? Let them know (in 1.03 servers) that you plan on upgrading the armory BEFORE you do so. Keep them informed on your plan of action and you will have a better time getting them to follow orders than not keeping them informed.

Make them feel as if they are an important part of the team and you will have a far easier time getting them to respond to your orders.

And about those turrets placements. Try to put your TF always against the wall or in a corner, so you dont need turrets all sides to the factory.

you could say "you can do 2 things, either rambo off and get murdered, or work with to help you murder" i dont comm much because i do infact prefer to murder, but that can get the marines going.

You'll earn respect as a commander if you maintain levels of communication with your troops. I always prefer to know that somebody is up there and isn't just reading the fancy helps on the console in their little padded chair.

Many people here give tips for being a better comm, but I recomend finding a better server. The Network 42 server has a large population of regulars who play with respect and know what they are doing. They always follow orders, never request more than once, don't swear at each other or their comm, understand that that the comm sometimes needs time, understand that the team doesn't have infinate resources and none of them are rambos. What's more, they welcome players who are learning the ropes and give them a helping hand to improve.

Even better, the server is going private starting this weekend. That will mean that it will be ONLY this kind of player who will be allowed on. Think you are this kind of player? All you need to do to get on is fill in an application form here http://www.xlii.com/nsindex.cfm. If you have the right attitude, you will be accepted. You can also check out the busy forums to see what other N42ers have to say, or to ask questions.

ATM it is still public, so if you want to try out 'Professional Natural Selection' you can here 208.144.248.101:27015

(We also have similar communities for CS, GR and AA)

    See you on the server.

yeah, most people like commanders who talk a lot over the voice comms. it commands far more power then typing. most of the players who rambo off often don't even pay attention to the typed messages. however, if they hear you telling them to do something, they'll often be very obedient and follow orders.

more often than not, you'll have one or two guys on the team who couldn't care less about your orders (even over voice comm). nothing much you can do with these guys, sadly. just remember to keep everybody else moving and doing something. if they get bored (especially on random pubs), people WILL wander. i guarantee that.

oh, and someone mentioned finding a server and sticking with it. that's an excellent idea! i only play on one server exclusively (enemywithin's natural selection). we've got a ton of regulars who play there, and it makes ns that much more fun to play. regulars of a server are far more receptive to orders than some random guy.

EDIT: oops, forgot to post the ip. it's at 216.182.48.178:27015. drop by sometime; we need more good commanders. when there are players on the server, about 90% of the time, there's an admin on. so there's always a nice, exploit-free/cheat-free game.

There is no way to get respect from your marines on a public server. you can be rolling in cash and have just won 10 games in a row and they will STILL vote to eject you...

or maybe that's cause i sound more like the drill instructor from full metal jacket when i command ^_^

Hmm I find that just staying calm and using voice chat a lot helps keep control of your troops. Its also a really good idea to have some people you know and who know the maps down on the ground helping. With the people on the ground that gives you defenders(that you know can defend) and gives you someone to lead the troops to the wps. And in response to someones "spam the wp" comment...dont do that as 1 you likely have a group selected and the ones who listen will be highly annoyed and 2 if you go out of your way to just spam 1 person your wasting time there where you could be doing other things. Best way to deal with rambo's was already mentioned its the reward system...it really does work wonders.

If I've spent my time building a base and keeping them alive, I expect some respect. If they want to whine about how much of a "stupid nub comm" I am because I'm not giving them HMG's everytime they die, then they're going to deal with it. If the majority of the marines start doing that, then the game is already lost seeing as how only half or a quarter of the team is doing anything. If they continue to sit in base and start throwing around insults, that's about when I recycle the base and let one of those geniuses command.

sry, i havent been in the forums much to stay on top of this...

to clarify a few points, my team was so spread out that if i tried to give them shorter wp routes i was surely distracted elsewhere and then they get stuck and whine some more.....and if i did give a wp they would go there, but just keep on going (i had a guy get to the hive i wanted him to go to, but instead of staying he ran off and got killed)

and in the case of "bad placement" im still not comfortable to the odd angle of the comm screen, and although i do well as a marine, i cant quite picture the room in the comm chair

i had an arms lab and i was upgrading, i was just soooo busy keeping track of everyone running every which way asking for every possible thing (health! res tower! ammo! what the hell r u doing? turret here!)

i guess i got shell shocked, which is something i so far have difficulty with

o, my friend gave me his other mic awhile ago and i do use it

    thx for all the input

Sounds like you just had bad marines, sometimes there is no way around that. I had a crappy weekend this past because of bad marines and a comm wanting to learn without asking if he could first. Just remember placement is an integral part of being comm.

I just love the nOObs asking for a grenade launcher when the advanced armory isn't even down yet, or for that matter asking for one when the rus are at 4 AND there is no advanced armory, hehehe.

I like to tell them "The more you ask, the less you'll get !" . Think I should bind it to a key

best way to gain respect is to understand what marines have to do, play as a marine more than u command, dont command all the time, get to know all the maps perfectly so you dont give insane orders, if u have trouble with a whole team, find the one or 2 good marines and pay attention to them, try and give general orders rather than specific ones, such as, i need one person to stay and guard main, usually someone will volunteer, if they dont then defend the main yourself, when u die and the base is gone, they might learn a lesson

Not to blow my own trumpet, but it's relevant to the topic.

I joined a server tonight (Roobubba's if anyone knows it) and was actually specifically asked by several people to go comm just because they recognised my name.

Now I'm not the best comm ever by any means, but I reckon that if people are asking me to be comm, I must be doing something right.

    So...

Find a couple of good servers and stick to them. Get to know the regulars. Learn ALL the levels inside out. The layout, the res nodes, the choke points, the vents, all from a first person perspective. At all times work with what you have, not with what you wish you had. Use rambos to your advantage if you can. Help the new players and dont lose your rag with them for not knowing how to build stuff. Be willing to learn not just from your mistakes, but other people's advice. If your marines are ALL telling you that you need a seige/welder/phase somewhere, then listen to them; they CAN see things you cant. Dont give in too stupid demands of stupid people. Get to know your team as fast and as well as possible.

Be very careful with cramming the tf and believing it is safe.

I cannot tell you how many times as a skulk I have squessed into the smallest space between a wall/corner/structure and the turret factory and chomped at will. Sometimes a single turret will hurt me, but over time I will get it down.

If a location is important enough to hold with a turret factory it is important enough to make sure a marine checks it every 30 seconds or guards the area. You just have to find a marine willing to guard a location for a good while. This can be hard but as comm I often will rotate guard duty so folks feel they are getting some action.

As far as gaining respect. I have found the best way is to always, and I mean ALWAYS show respect to the marines, even if they are not showing respect to you. A calm commander is the most important thing in the game.
