People Hogging Positions...

Sometimes I've noticed that when I play several rounds in a row on the same server, the games start to mimic eachother. The worst part I've noticed is the Gorge position. Usually it's one person (most likely a cl@nn3r) that constantly refuses to do anything but go gorge. It gets really annoying that no one else gets a chance to play that position. I've just noticed this on aliens teams, the commanders seems to switch off each round - so maybe it's just me. Anyone notice people hogging the same positions?

Not to play devil's advocate, but I do that quite often. In the group that I play with (we're not a clan, we're just friends that play NS together), we often will have only one gorge. He/she drops 3 RTs and then saves. It isnt really that hard to do. By the time the third RT is built, the skulks are at 33/33 and the res are flowing into the gorge to build the second hive.
While I have played multiple gorge rounds and acknowledge that it does/can work, I just want to point out to you that the single gorge scenario can be just as effective.
Have a nice day!
Afterall, getting those hives and resources are both pointless if you allow the Marines to run amok across the rest of the map.
been burnt so many times with newb gorges. but i will let anyone else gorge if they wish, i find few ppl want to gorge at the start usually (excruciatingly boring at the start, wiating for first RT).
i prefer the 3-4 RT PLUS hive RT then 2nd hive. personally <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
At this point, I either quit or switch to the marine team if the gorge doesn't know what he is doing. If we have more than one gorge, I too go gorge and offer to switch back when the team agrees that one gorge is enough.
Although the idea of having one gorge get res nodes, and one save for hive sounds nice, you will actually get a second hive faster with only one gorge. If you don't agree, your math skills are lacking. Simply, the gorges get 3 res per tick for every 1 res any other alien class would get. When you have more than one gorge, that means you have 2 players on that team with the 3 to 1 res bonus. While you have one gorge slowly waiting at a hive, getting 1 res per tick, saving up to 80, and another gorge, hardly ever building new res collectors because he also is only getting one res per tick, you are wasting time, and it is taking way longer to get a second hive than if there is one gorge...
If you only had one gorge, he would be getting more res faster, and could get more res collectors up faster, which would let him save up 80 faster for a hive. Simply, the more gorges you have, the slower the alien team can build. One gorge can place more buildings faster than 2, 2 gorges can build faster than 3 and so on...
On top of all this, the biggest thing multiple-gorge supporters always seem to forget is that the more gorges you have, the less attack-class players you have. For every extra gorge on your team, you are essentially down a player, because marines can only have one commander. When you have 3 gorges, that means the marines are at a 2 player advantage over you. The combination of not building fast enough, and not having enough fighting aliens, is what always kills multiple gorge teams. The only time I've ever seen an alien team win with multiple gorges is when the marines had a really inexperianced commander. I've never lost a marine game to an alien team with multiple gorges, simply because marines will build more faster than a team with more than one gorge.
Probably because some people belive their words and meanings weigh heavier than others. And when they bear the clan tag on top of it, well you remember!
I think your argument is partially flawed.
First there is no bonus if I understand it correctly. The gorge gets a large part of the pie, but there's just that much pie so what the gorge does is to lower the income of OTHER aliens. Distribution is all there is to it, no inane bonus that makes res out of thin air. That is how I have come to understand alien res economy. SOmeone correct me if I am wrong.
The real cost of two gorges is 13 rp - the gorge that evolves 2nd is taking out 13 rp of the pool. So in that sense, you are right since 2 gorges get a hive slower on at least 13 rp.
But.
If 2nd gorge focuses on capping nodes, that means the income flow ups all the while gorge 1 sits on his tubby **** raking in. Once the 2nd gorge has completed a set goal, let's say cap 3 nozzles and build 1 or 2 def chambers perhaps, he kills himself by console - that means his res goes to pool instead of him wasting 4 res on skulking. Now gorge 1 gets a larger slice of pie, and since he didnt waste res on building nozzles or c hambers, he should get to 80 fairly quick with a head start.
The 2nd hive should go up fast enough because of this - but I cannot tell HOW fast. compared to 1 gorge, just that when i've seen it done it didnt feel that long for 2nd hive.
1) One gorge gets RPs faster than each of 2 gorges --
(a) One gorge gets 3/10 shares on an 8-man team (7 skulks*1 + 1 gorge*3 = 10)
(b) Two gorges each get 3/12 or 1/4 shares (6 skulks*1 + 2 gorges*3 = 12)
© 3/10 > 1/4 -- though not by much.
2) Each additional RT adds a fairly significant RP flow (It's a linear progression, but it's not exactly 1x, 2x, 3x, ... - more like 1x+c, 2x+c, 3x+c, ...)
3) (This one is the kicker) Each alien that "caps" at 33 RPs increases the gorge's resource flow, because it is removed from the calculation. On an 8-man team, imagine 4 of the skulks cap out. Now the Gorge is receiving 3/6 or 1/2 of the RPS (3 uncapped skulks*1 + 1 gorge*3 = 6)!
If all non-gorges cap out,
(a) On a one-gorge team, he will receive RPs 3.33 times as fast as he did at the beginning of the game (1 vs. 3/10).
(b) On a two-gorge team, each will receive RPs twice as fast as he did at the beginning of the game (1/2 vs. 1/4).
#3 is what will be addressed in V1.1, I would bet. Flayra wants to make multi-gorge teams a viable option (though of course not to excess). The question is whether the increased RP flow from multiple gorges setting up multiple RTs will make up for the slower draw speed of having more than one gorge.
