    The official word from the developers is that data boxes only fail to open when you already have learned that item. LOL.

    The cheat command to give you a blueprint when the data box won't open is:

    UNLOCK <item>

    For example, at life pod 3 you are *supposed* to get the compass from a data box. To force that unlock, do this:

    Hit F3 and make sure the box 'Disable Console' isn't checked
    Press the key for ~ (This is to the left of the #1)
    Type: UNLOCK COMPASS

    Chiming in that this is also not working for me, tested in a fresh world and immediately diving for the grassy plateau data chip and no luck, definitely did not have the blueprint beforehand. V 46199

    Edit: It is indeed working again as Garath points out, just tried picking up an unlearned chip and it worked no problem. V 46228
