So it looks like the Natural Selection Technology Release was released some time before the mod was originally released (not sure how long before). There was nstr_install.exe and nstr2_install.exe (the second one was an updated version I guess?).
I've managed to track down nstr2_install.exe but does anyone happen to have a copy of the first release by any chance?

NS2 tech release was a simple models mod for HL2 though
It still exists. Create a local server with "sv_cheats 1" and fire "toggleeditps" at your client console.
Neat video. In my searchers I came across quite a few screenshots from that era but unfortunately nstr_install.exe seems to have disappeared from the Internet. Shame because it looked quite interesting.
Someone uploaded their archive of Half-Life stuff for posterity and that little gem was in there.
