So what happens to the creatures killed by a themal vent?

Sometimes I head to the vent to get silver. And the damage I suffer from the ambient heat won't stop me (but I still watch out for eruptions as those can heat things a bit too much). And I notice that there's piles of cooked (and rotting) fish down there. What happens to them? Do they eventually despawn due to being vaporized by the vent? Do they stay there and eventually cause your machine to slow to a crawl? Too bad you can't just eat them unless you've got a LOT of fresh water handy...

Excellent question. I've seen in a lot of Unity games that having individual items like that floating around kills frame rates (Kerbal Space Program). If there's a way to get down there without dying it might be worth it to gather up all that stuff and put it in a locker you delete to get rid of them.

"Death" is temporary flag state. Take your eyes off them and they'll reanimate in a few minutes.

If they're still in the thermal vent then they might die again immediately though. Having creatures constantly animate and die might be bad for frame rates too.

I tried one time and entered a thermal vent in an Exosuit to see if my character or vehicle would take heat damage. Neither one did and I was surprised to find close to 40 Cooked Peepers at the bottom 'floor' of the thermal vent. You can pick them up with the Exosuit arms and retrieve them from storage when it's safe. However from the point you pick them up, the game considers them created as if you made them yourself. So they'll start to go bad if you don't use them immediately, so you don't want to take too many at once.

I think I will just pick out the ones that aren't TOO decomposed and eat them immediately (and drink lots of water afterward), then throw the rest outside the vent... if they really do respawn that is.
