My 3 Day (realtime) HC character was swimming along in the shallows looking for some quartz. Just needed some glass for the windows in my second moonpool. My character had lived through so much. Close encounters of the reaper-kind, crab squid jump scares, blacked screens of oxygen deprived dives, etc. My top near death experience was as follows:
I was testing the range of the scanner drones, and when it finally blacked out I went to retrieve it... Now mind you I was stupid and didn't find a point of reference, so it was lost along some dunes. After a literal hour of searching (I wasn't about to build another one) I saw it! I pointed my seamoth and hit throttle... As I got to the drone I hopped out and swam the last metre to pick it up. As I turn to head back to the seamoth my stomach dropped. A silent reaper (had been quiet up until this point) passed by me (within 3 metres of my character). At this point I was so terrified. A real sense of dread passed over my body as I knew there was no quitting and saving. I had to face this situation. Instead of my life, the reaper took my seamoth and slammed it into the ground causing it to shatter... I turned and headed straight to my base, luckily I made it out. I took a deep breath. My Mothy (as I named her) had sacrificed her life for me... I had a picture of her and framed it above my bed (in game lol) with the words printed above "Mothy,".
Hardcore brings something to the table that the other plays just don't. I mostly play freedom for now (until the game is a little more fleshed out), but I suggest everyone give it a go at one stage.
As for the character in the shallows looking for quartz...well I accidentally swam into a crashfish cave and died to two explosions
Three minutes. The one time I decided to try hardcore mode, my Lifepod was above a squad of Gasopods. I made it down and past them to get titanium and fish, but then was bombarded by gas on my return trip... game over.
I like how you have to plan for emergencies before you go for a trip.
For example in my Cyclops I have a locker that contains all the necessary stuff to quickly build a small emergency habitat with a nuclear reactor and a fabricator. Just in case my sub happens to sink to the bottom of the ocean somewhere. Although I'm thinking of replacing that with a locker full of Big Tanks and an Air Bladder so I can just GTFO ASAP.
Or how I always have Medical Kits, Beacons and Welders in every vehicle I have.
Anyone else playing like this? Maybe we can share tips & tricks for survival.
Tried the Survival mode the first day I played the game.
Died about 15 times in the first couple of hours...
Decided Freedom mode, was a better fit for me from that point on.
Though, I am thinking about trying it again when 1.0 hits.
That is if all the changes they make between now and then don't seem too excessive.
(I'm already annoyed with the Seamoth power drain change with the Sept. update)

I've stuck to Survival mode mostly since.
The end.
