Robot Assistants?

Had a thought about crafting a small robotic drone that could follow you around and perform various tasks.

Players would be limited to one or two drones, and the drones could be customised to help fight, harvest, scan, build etc. Each drone could only have a few specialisations so it would make for a neat little tool.

Also, customisable colours and extras (fins, screens), cute robot noises and perhaps an LED face screen?

After its made just name it and you can call it to follow you or stay where it is. Bam, Robot Assistant.

EDIT - Thanks to comments for the idea.

Malfunctioning and old drones could be found across the planet with varying degrees of hostility. You could hunt them down for their parts to scan them for upgrade blueprints for your own drone!

Maybe even find some special items for them ;D

That sounds like a cool idea! Yet another great idea that you have shared. I had a similar idea but about rouge AI. Abondoned sea bases could have faulty drones that would seek you out and attack! Although it would need some extra coding that would take time.

That wouldn't make much sense. Think about it, the bases are dilapidated and nothing works. If the metal walls on the bases themselves have corroded and sometimes even collapsed, an incredibly complex and fragile drone won't make it. Though on the Aurora, security drones that survived the crash could be deployed in the PRAWN bay and engine room when you got close, and would scan for some form of PDA ID that you could find somewhere in the wreckage.

It isn't that far fetched to think that Rogue AI in abandoned bases could be a thing. When you first go onto the Floating Island the AI says something about faint energy signatures dotted about the island. I imagine that these rogues are a little pissed that they're not getting the energy they deserve, and hate the humans that abandoned them. I imagine they are faulty, though, and one blast from the repulsion cannon would rip them apart.

Encountering glitchy, malfunctioning robot drones could also serve as a way to find upgrade blueprints for your newly crafted helpers ;) imagine swimming around looking for drones that have unique parts in order to upgrade your own.

    The idea sounds nice.
but i thimk they would be to strong in the early game. Maybe if you first encounter old drones in bases below 900m where they possibly were needed to do maintanence because of the pressure etc?
Id love a lil robot companion, but not too early in the game

@ElMonstro Could have the blueprints to make the drone in the first place scattered in a deep biome. They're not supposed to be too powerful, more like inexpensive tools.

Maybe a combination of these nerfs:

    - Different levels of drone scan parts located at different depths (Mk1, Mk2 etc)
    - Slot upgrades found at lower depths (1 slot, 2 slot, 3 slot)
    - Tool upgrades found at lower depths (Stun rod, Shock rod, Lightning rod)

Yeah, sounds like a good middleway

if you want drones, then you have to make propulsion cannons easier to get. otherwise it would be a repeat of facing against a reaper without a weapon, and players will otherwise be genuinely angry they cant explore an island because of robots they cant deal with.

Yupp, true dat. bit maybe you can work aroumd that.
Find dead drones in early POI and let the Drone counter the still functional ones in later bases. Like this you dont need the PC and can find and scan a lil companion

i did a concept on robotics a while back, making sentries mostly and scout crafts. it holds up slightly better than these, only because they arent out to kill you.

@Sigmalx without more dangerous drones there wouldn't be a challenge in finding more powerful parts. Some drones would be peaceful, some would be wrecks, and it would throttle how much you can gain in a certain amount of time.

Not that the depth of certain upgrades wouldn't do that already.
