More customization

Okay so I am a new player of the game, but right off the bat I noticed that for a game that is essentially about building your own base and surviving as long as you can there isn't a whole lot of customization for both the character and the sea bases. Sure you can customize the appearance of the submarines, but you can only change the colors and the name which is pretty sad. I believe should be able to change the appearance of your base and character to reflect your personal style. Who knows maybe I am asking too much, this is after all the very first time I have ever suggested something to an early access game. Please let me what you guys think I am very interested to see what other ideas you guys have.

I don't need it. This whole customization thing in all RPGs and now all games feels kinda pointless to me. If the devs wanna do it then sure, but I don't care for it. For the most part I even leave the Seamoths and Cyclops name and color the same.

I don't think we need character customisation; that would somewhat take me out of the story, thinking that we are all of us following the story of different people and not this one survivor as an entire community. As for base customisation, I feel as though we have a reasonable amount of choice there. If you go onto the sea base showcase thread then you can see some pretty cool bases that people have built. Seamoth and Cyclops customisation I feel is good as it is; you need to gather the materials needed to create a submarine that has been pre-made by Torgaljin (I don't know if I spelt that right). It's like our character is using pre-made assets from the company that the aurora belonged to, he just needs to find the materials. On the surface though, customisation does sound like a good idea, just to a reasonable extent. If we were able to colour our base the same way we can colour our subs, I'd be happy :)

I didn't realize there was so much story in the game, and I love story! However, in my experience what little bit of story I have found has been too hard to pursue, so I just play for the survival and undersea discovery aspect. Maybe that is the only issue that I have just had a hard time pursuing the story line, but like I said I am a new player of the game.

How exactly would you like to customize your seabase? Change the color of walls? Because there's already a lot of stuff: aquariums, plants, shelves, tables, chairs, vending machines, trash cans... and more is probably coming.

All of that is completely fine :) I think the devs want progression in survival to correlate with progression in story. Maybe you haven't heard, but there's a biome very deep down; the Inactive Lava Zone. There is a castle, and inside is 1: an imprisoned Sea Emperor Leviathan and 2: A Sea Dragon Leviathan guarding it. Apparently an alien race known as the Precursors (the same dudes that supposedly shot down the Aurora and a ship that came before the Aurora, the Degasi) owns the Sea Dragon and are still living on this planet. You're gonna have to go down to this place to get some of the materials you need. Story isn't easy to follow yet; you have to actively go and find it. I think they're trying to blend the two together, which inmy knowledge will be the first time a survival game has done this.

I can see making some basic customizations to your sea base, similar to how we can currently customize the colors on the subs. A single setting could apply an exterior color scheme for the whole base and give it a bit more personality. Personally, I don't need to customize the main character, I'm ok stepping into his shoes and assuming his identity. Since this is (currently) a single player game, there is no real reason to customize the character. You'll never see yourself (with the odd exception of looking at yourself through a scanner room drone) and any changes to appearance would go unappreciated for the entirety of the game.
I can understand maybe being able to choose your sex and play as a female, perhaps with basic changes to the sounds your character makes and how the hands/paperdoll look. But that's it.

Currently, modules (upgrades) for your subs also change their external appearance. This happens with the Seamoth (small sub) when you add storage compartments or torpedoes. The same should happen with the Cyclops (big sub) as you add modules but right now the available modules are very limited. Aside from that, leaving just basic customization for subs makes sense. You're not designing these things from scratch, you're collecting blueprints which can then be used by a fabricator to create said item. This makes more sense when you consider that the crashed ship was on route to the planet to colonize/explore/terraform before being shot down. You were part of an expedition which had already determined the optimal equipment to bring with them; you are simply finding/crafting that equipment and using it for survival.

I would like to see more to do with the exterior of the sea base, as I play more and more I am seeing tons of features I hadn't really noticed before for interior customizations, but exterior wise I haven't noticed a whole lot besides the underwater gardens.

@ArbiterLegends OK but it's still vague... any feature idea in particular? The developpers may hear you so seize the opportunity. :)

I would love for the ability to camouflage the base and change the base's color. The main thing I would like to see though would be the ability to create underwater aquaculture, in the real world they have developed these underwater "domes" that house thousands of fish for researchers to study and farm. I know you can somewhat do that with the aquariums, but you can't do that for the bigger fish. The ability to create artificial environments is I guess what I am really saying. I would like to incorporate natural elements into the exterior of my base like, growing a garden on the roof of my moon base, different types of lights that can speed up or slow down the growth of the environment/garden, and this one is slightly unrelated, but the ability to create walls, courtyards, etcetera, etcetera. The bases look to industrialized from the outside.

Good direction, I like the idea of more customization on the exterior. This could scale a bit with progress as well. Maybe something like:
-more outdoor growbed types. long, short, narrow, tall, whatever..
-a few color/texture choices for your habitat builder
-better choices in internal and external lighting and control of it from a central location (PDA or base console)
-possible defenses (this is being discussed elsewhere)
-tamed/pet/relocated fish including (medium)predators as possible base guards
...could lead all the way to a holographic grid that makes your base seem to blend more naturally with the surrounding biome. (I would love to live in a rock with windows but would appear normal from the inside)

Another thing that would be very helpful/awesome, and this is somewhat unrelated, would be a docking port for the Cyclops.
