What Are You Paying For This Server?!

Whatever it is, it's way to much. I tried getting on here 3 different times today and all three times it was down. Now I finally get on but it's slower than mollasses running uphill.

If you guys put up a 'keep NS alive! Donate!' there's no way in hell I'd donate for a service I only have access to once in a while.

If I were you I'd get a lawyer to call up the server owner for unreliable services.

According to the domain registration record, this server is hosted at RackShack. I have a server there as well. RackShack provides only the hardware, rackspace, power and bandwidth. They do not guarantee anything regarding what services you will be able to reliably run on the server. They can only guarantee a certain amount of uptime for the connection to the internet, and the electrical power.

In other words, either the server is underpowered for the level of activity on these forums, or the forum software itself is not up to the task. I'm guessing it's the latter, but I can't be sure.

Looks to me like its a problem with mySQL not the server. Move the board to phpBB, problem solved.

It's a mySQL problem.. though that can range from anywhere between a corrupted database or a flub in the ISP's configuration of it. I run a small Invision board on my own site and it works great. Maybe Invision wasn't made for such a large community? Or maybe they need to clean out the board archives...

I dunno, I'd like to hear from someone about this, simply because I have an Invision board of my own and would hate to see it tank like this one does someday

Spyder Monkey said a while ago it was caused by errors in the database on the server, and he MAY have mentioned the crappy configuration. I know it involved the server.

Too bad, because of all the webboard software out there i've come to like invision quite a lot. A lot of careful design has been put into it on the user end of it. I hope it's config problems, and not the board software causing havoc and molest.

I would recommend vBulletin. I've seen it hold up very well on a site that gets considerably more traffic than n-s.org. I also use it myself on a site that I'd guess gets about 1 10th of the traffic. It's very configurable and fully customizable.

If it's a poor setup of the MySQL itself, that's nothing that can be fixed by any message board software change.

it could be errors things not changing over right

im guessing they used a converter when they switched boards and that
    can at tiems cause problems

The NS.org site itself is rarely down. The forums are frequently down. The obvious conclusion is it's a software problem with the forum, and has nothing to do with the server.

Besides, the forums being down means I spend less time reading/writing, and more time playing, but that's just me

It isn't Invision Board. I've seen plenty of community's that run that board with MUCH bigger member base then this one. Believe me, it's not the software. Invision Board is one of the best around.

It's the board, unfortunately, but Monse had hacked into the code to make some functions work (there was a bug in the version we are using) to make it all work. Since then, lots of forum crashes. I think an upgrade to the newest version is soon...

Has nobody noticed the wording that plagues the bottom of every page?

Powered by Invision Board v1.1 BETA 2 © 2002 Invision PS

The bit I'm drawing attention to is the word 'Beta'. normally all software is released prior to it actually being completed and properly tested but when the developers actually stamp BETA on the logo rather than RC2 alarm bells ring. Either the developers are being overly honest or they really have no confidence in the stability of their software.

I love all the "This is why it's broken" suggestions.

*I don't know anything, maybe I should read the whole post for the real answer*
