Marblemelon can't be farmed?

I've done this half a dozen times now. I've set up farms for Lantern Trees, Chinese Potatoes and Marblemellons, all grabbed from Floater Island.

The Lantern Trees and Chinese Potatoes grow normally, turning into plants that produce removable food pods. Marblemellons, on the other hand, never produce any detachable fruit. Any attempt to use them results in the entire original plant being pulled from the planter. In other words, Marblemellons don't reproduce. Ever.

I thought at first I simply wasn't waiting long enough, but I've seen forests of other plants grow to maturity with no results from the Marblemellons. Finally I switched to Freedom mode and just left the game run for over two hours before coming back and still no new Marblemellon fruit had grown. So this has got to be a bug, unless the devs meant for them to be unfarmable?

Note: I've had no trouble growing any other plant in the game, edible or otherwise. It's just the Marblemellons that remain in apparent perpetual stasis.

It's always been like that for me. It is either that it only produces one melon or it is bugged. But it's always been like that.

You can always use your knife to take its seeds and plant them afterwards. Usually they will give you four seeds for each plant.

Acid Mushrooms and Marblemelons use the same mechanic: click to pick, knife to destroy it and get seeds/spores.

What Pandadan said -its not a bug, its the way they are designed. You have to harvest the seeds with a knife, then replant. The marblemelon is the highest nutrition/energy plant in the game, so the extra difficulty in harvest/replanting offsets that. The lantern fruit tree offers less nutrition/energy, but does not have to mature between harvesting.

So ka. Perhaps they should add that detail to the wiki, then. I would never have considered that had all of you not told me. At least I know, now
