    • Try resetting your options file. Delete this folder: /Steam/userdata/ < steamid > /4920 (resets options by generating a new options.xml the next time you start NS2)
    • Delete your local NS2 files. Delete this folder: %APPDATA%/Natural Selection 2
    • Be sure you downloaded all the files. Sometimes Steam for whatever reason, misses some files when downloading games. You can verify you have everything by right clicking Natural Selection 2 in your steam library > Properties > Local Files tab > Verify Intregrity of Game Cache. This should download anything you are missing. (or if you've deleted something)
    • Run Techsupport.exe (located in your NS2 install directory) and attach the zip file it makes to your post. This gives us a log NS2 makes, possibly containing errors, as well as provide us with your system’s hardware and driver information so we can spot issues.

@muxaul i have known of avast stopping ns2 from running correctly for some people, or flagging ns2 as malware. Try whitelisting NS2.exe or disabling avast temporarily and see if you are able to run ns2.

Hmmm I found this more to be a case with AVG than AVAST but YMMV.

Am I the only one who gets "couldn't initialize the render device"?

@DinoCarnage You should probably start a separate thread for your issue as it sounds different, but off the top of my head I would guess it would be because of your video drivers or an insufficient graphics card.

I need a lot more information from you to be able to help you however, like your techsupport.exe generated zip file. (which is where starting your own thread comes in)
