<div class="IPBDescription">Sensory chamber first hive</div> I recently got called a noob on a server for building a sensory chamber for our first upgrade...
It saved my **** 3 times on my way to build the 2nd hive, I've only done this maybe 3 times total but each time we have won, besides once, cuz i could pass by marines while cloaked.
It a nice strategy if you believe you need it, most of the time i go with def my first and 2nd is usually cloaking unless i'm gaurded then it's movement.
And also i believe the people that i was playin' with had no real strategy cuz even with cloaking you can hide and attack. It's nice if ya need it but not always needed.

    I'll give you the short list of complaints you'll hear about this build order.

    It may be good for the gorge, but it's bad for the skulks. Cloaking doesn't stop bullets. You can't cloak while attacking, and aliens spend a LOT more time attacking than defending... and even when they're defending, they're usually attacking an outpost that's too near the hive. You just CAN'T cloak in the middle of a firefight. Carapace works either way, though.

    A couple defense chambers, and a couple offense chambers, and you have a self-sufficient defense. A movement at each hive, and you can defend two hives as easily as one. So what's that leave everyone else to do? Attack. Not only are the upgrades of the other two chambers more offensivly-inclined, but so are the passive abilities.

    Relying on sensory (basicly just cloaking) puts you in WAY too defensive of a position to stand a chance against most marine teams. It may work sometimes, but usually only when the aliens are a much better team than the marines. Carapace and adrenaline are reliable, cloaking isn't. Motion tracking doesn't stop carapace or adrenaline from being useful, it does for cloaking. Movement and defense chambers make it so you can hold territory with ease, and free up most of your team for taking new ground, sensory doesn't help much at all. You just give up too much for too little.

    But I still love sensory <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    It just needs some tweaking (which is being done!) to make everything closer to equal value. Then I'll smile when I see that first sensory chamber being built.

    Bad idea. Just read insidious' post.

    Dying from 9 bullets vs 19... huge difference (non-cara vs cara).

    Plus no healing for o-towers or anyone on front lines.

    Sensorys suck, unfortunately :/ Any decent team will build them 3rd... and by that time, the game is over. The marines are going alamo in their base.

    Looking forward to 1.1 though... would be nice to have a real choice between towers.

    Well i'll give this bit of more info.
    The game i was refering to we won. When i came into the game the game was 20 mins in and no 2nd hive that place was crawling with marines and they had gotten to our hive. I had tried twice before to reacha new hive before i went gorge and built sens. The marines were a far better team than the aliens but when i got sens i was able to stop and cloak to let marines by so i eneded up makin' it to the 2nd hive. After i got the 2nd hive up i went with def chambers and the skulks did 200% better... It was a 30 person server i believe maybe 32 so we had plenty of guys by the time i got the 2nd hive up we almost lost the first but then we were able to not only see them but also have carpace by then. Now i'll say it again cuz i've said i before i believe... Carpace is nice and all but cloaking when you have incoming marines is even better you can let them pass and get behind them easily.
    we won that game not even with onos we got the 3rd hive up with the same strategy i would let marines pass by while i was cloaked. and within 10 mins of me bein' there we had gone from losing our only hive to having all 3 and crontrolling the map.
    Now people can call me a noob all they want or what ever but i did what i needed to win and that was sens chambers to pass by marines. It worked out great. Alothough again it's not a main strategy of mine but i've used it 3 times now and all but 1 we won.

    The main reason noone is good at killing people while cloaked is because you never get to practise...

    by the time you et cloakingthe onos are ripping the marine base apart...

    I hate to be a skeptic, but 20 minutes into a game and a chamber type wasn't already thrown up?

    Yeah, i've seen people calling someone a noob if he builds *anything* than Defense first than movement, than sensory... Whats up with people... Its like "OOOH End of tha world!!! WE LOSE!" etc.

    Is this order written somewhere or is this just "the way its always done" ™
    from previous games. With or without out your carapace, you can eat marines, and they will shoot you in the end. Its not like you notice the difference when 3 marines are shoothing at you <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    And besides, half of the "carapace" users do take it, but they dont heal themself so..its like being without it or even weaker.     It may have worked that game, it may have worked other games, but it won't work in the majority of games... or maybe it WILL work in the majority of games, but it won't work in the majority of games with equally skilled teams. There are just too many counters to cloaking, while the only counter to carapace is to shoot the aliens more, which takes more time, which means the aliens get to bite you more, which means you can't shoot them as much... I LOVE cloaking, and scent of fear, but they're just not as usefull as being able to live twice as long (and thus having twice as long to kill, and thus living MUCH longer than twice as long). You can still hide, sneak, and ambush without cloaking, it just takes more work. No matter how hard you work, though, cloaking isn't going to stop bullets. I can make a case for taking sensory instead of movement, as scent of fear turns an acid rocket into a large parasite. Launch a couple in passing at a marine outpost, then hide. That should have been enough to get them in sight, then you can nail them with a full volley, knowing exactly where they are. You don't need the extra shots, because you don't miss as much. But this means you can't warp between hives when one's under attack <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The current build order has very logical reasons... and that's why it's a problem. The aim is to make everything an equally logical choice, just suited to (equally common) situations. As it is, the situations that cloaking is better for are few and far between, and usually involve getting your arse kicked first.
