You're not alone, same problem here, seems to be a wide-spread issue with no immediate fix.

Well, today the H2.O update became installed in my Steam copy of the game. I am able to start the game then I deleted my old saves and started a new game as recommended. I hit the same problem of a game freeze with "... not reponding" after a couple of seconds either still in the capsule or diving for resources. The old version of the game ran flawlessly in that regard. I am running Windows 7 and an AMD/ATI Radeon graphics card so I should not be affected by the nVidia issue mentioned in the release notes.

OK, just an update to my issue - I was about to file a proper bug report but was able to solve the issue. First of all I activated the "experimental" builds by choosing the proper setting in the Steam game preferences on the "Beta" tab. After that the game got updated again - now I am running version 27156 from January 2016. Now the game freeze did no longer occur after 20-30 seconds but after 10-20 minutes - an improvement at least. After that I added "-force-d3d9" to the command line start options and this seems to have fixed it - I did not experience a game freeze or even a crash since that (so far). But, of course, since the game is still in development there is always the recommendation "save early, save often".

Unfortunately this just made it worse for me and crashes before even starting in experimental. But in normal mode, it crashes when I try to go back in my Pod for some reason, but I get a crash from my graphics card. The AMD stops responding or times out. I checked all my graphics and audio drivers and they are all up to date. I had 20 hours of gameplay before the H2O update and it was working fine before. :-(

In the same boat as you, tried experimental and it just crashed everything earlier.
Everything was fine and up to date with no major problems prior to the H2.0 update, even had about 20hrs of gameplay myself.

Did you try starting the game with "-force-d3d9" like joglass mentioned?
