Vanishing tools

So I'm playing version 25277 (I think; the 5 and the 2 are so close it might be 26. That font is not really helpful.) and... I can't use the knife or light. I haven't managed to get to any other tools yet, because of this.
Unless I drop the knife or light on the ground, pick it up, and hold it, I get this:

They're invisible, they make no noise, the character does nothing when I right or left click, and the light sheds no light. Also my performance drops to something akin to a slideshow.
If I DROP the knife/flashlight, and pick it up, they work perfectly until I switch to another tool.
Since these are kinda important tools in this game... help?
