Can't join servers, downloading mods times out constantly.

hobosaurushobosaurus Australia Join Date: 2015-11-03 Member: 208928Members
Have been wanting to play but every time i try to join a server the mods it's trying to download times out.

I've tried changing download regions, turning off steam cloud, deleting ns2 from %steamapps% and unsubscribing from mods in the steam workshop.

I'm at a loss here, please help!

I was about to submit the same question. It started happening since the last major patch that reduced load time. I did the trouble shooting offered in the tech support thread as well.0rq8c7469rsv.jpg

I have this same issue when certain mods update on the workshop. I know several other people that have had or still have this issue.

NS2 sits there trying to download, and if you quit out of the game the process is still running in the background. And the mod folder in question will be deleted from your workshop folder.

The way I've fixed it is to either download the mod from http://steamworkshopdownloader.com, or have a backup older version of the mod folder somewhere. Make sure NS2 process is full closed, and put the mod folder into the workshop folder. Then try to join the server again.

For whatever reason even placing the older version of the mod folder in the workshop folder will allow you past the downloading mods check almost instantly.

    That's a really interesting observation.

For everyone else having this issues try to connect to a server with a workshop backup server (The thirsty Onos, DMD, Wooza, TAW, ...) and see if the mods download there.

    @hobosaurus @bs_ @greenie

What is your network setup, from ISP to router to modem to wifi channel etc?

Just out of curiosity (it may not help at all) would you fellows mind typing both "verbose 3" and "net_log 53" in the console (~ key) without the quotes - before attempting to connect to a server you have issues with?
Then provide us with your techsupport.exe generated zip file.

    Thanks

You sure this is the decision you want to make? This game has incredible replay value (been playing the NS series for 12 years now). You'll miss out on some truly great moments, friendships, frustrations and victories.

Our tech support are doing everything they can to help you, you should be alittle more patient.

What antivirus / firewall are you running in place? Have you tried disabling them briefly whilst you attempt to download mods? Something is stopping you from reaching the host.

    start ns2 with - verbose 3.
Or in console before joining a server type 'verbose 3'.
    Then join.
If you join a TAW eu server (So UK or LU) im even willing to look at the server side of the logs. Just let me know which server at which date and time.

Verbose 3 shows a lot of info in regards of mod downloads.

i think the verbose 3 worked. i got into the server. i did have to verify my game.
  • greeniegreenie Join Date: 2015-11-03 Member: 208931Members
no i ran verify plenty of times without the game fixing. youre wrong

No I am not. That is, if you only did verify and verbose.
Steams verify doesnt always work that well. Sadly.
Verbose is JUST logging. It does nothing else.

So if your problem is gone after only 2 steps, which are verify and enabling deeper logging, than it can not be the latter. Its just logging.
Im glad its fixed, but lets keep to facts here, for others who have similar problems.

    >edit
although the most likely scenario and what PROBABLY fixed it, is the workshop stopped being a bugger for you.
Steam workshop is truly not that reliable. Its the most likely scenario.

Verbose 3 did not fix anything.
  • greeniegreenie Join Date: 2015-11-03 Member: 208931Members
Can it be verified that workshop is the problem? I've been having the same issue since the load time patch. I re-read the post and realized i already had verbose 3 on. when i tried to join a server i noticed the mod lists showed their proper names. then i got kicked with the message stating ns2 had the wrong files and needed to be verify. I verified and then was able to join the same server.
  • DC_DarklingDC_Darkling Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18068Members, Constellation, Squad Five Blue, Squad Five Silver
Be SURE verbose 3 is on if you can repeat the problem.
NS2's non verbose logging in console is more clear lately, hence im saying.

The obvious step would be to just post the log here, so we can read it and see whats wrong. If its the workshop the log will make that clear.

Also wrong files would hint at consistancy, which is not the same perse. But yes, if a mod is outdated then you would get such a error.
Note the server can also be outdated. Only servers with configured mod backup servers bypass this problem entirely.
TAW servers have them set up. Thirsty onos servers also. And.. Wooza's if I remember ok. I am sure there are more, but these spring to mind.

Its most likely the workshop. Its why the CDT came up with mod backup servers in the first place, and why many of the bigger server communities have set some up.
