Sounds in the ocean

Now, I've never been scuba diving in the ocean before, but I feel like there aren't enough sounds down there.
We got the dolphin sounds everywhere in the shallows but there doesn't seem to be any creatures emitting them.
Basically, only the bigger animals in the ocean make seem to make sounds. I'm pretty sure that a coral reef makes a lot of noise too.

Also, if you go deeper into the ocean, wouldn't the amount of water pressure dampen the sounds a bit?

I'm not too use about the deeper you are the less the sounds are since sound travels better in denser objects and since the water partials are closer together then I would imagine it would have an easier time. in regards to sounds in the ocean. the devs are adding new creatures with new sounds all the time. the reefbacks are a great example as whenever one is near me I can't get away from the sound. when I am in the kelp forest I am always hearing the stalkers. and the dolphin sounds you hear, I am sure those are from the peepers. i'm not sure about the garry fish, hole fish, air bladders and stuff like that but I know the peepers, gasopods and bleeders all make sounds too. also the new reaper makes a terrifying sound. but you can only really hear it when he is about to take a big bite of what your mama gave you for your 0th birthday. the bonesharks ghostly sound is also extremely common below 100m.

just a note: water density does not change that much with pressure - at 10000m, deepest part of the ocean, the water density is increased by only 5% (mostly because of temperature).

well I am not very knowledgeable on this subject. though I just tried to make the most logical guess I could based on what I do know ;) either way sound is not dampened the deeper you go.

totally agreed - perfect logic! I've not been under water for a long time, but as I remember there was no big difference when diving deeper (down to 35m), just the own respiration sounded differently. And the own respiration was the predominant sound.

But I can imagine when the devs add more creatures, there will be a lot more sounds... and I can imagine that not all will be a good sign... *cough* reaper *cough*

I'm a certified scuba diver, and I can say that this game already has MORE than realistic sound levels and quality. The ocean is very quiet. I already consider the shallows to be the absolute maximum of noise I can tolerate and appreciate it. A very well done sound board. Increasing it any more would make it sound too crazy and distracting (Mostly because I know what the real ocean sounds like, and it would bug me).

That being said, I am not averse to adding new creatures, so long as they don't make noise along with the other life forms, so we can appreciate them individually. Or in small numbers.

@TheWangMuncher What I had meant is more sounds over the general ocean (and by general ocean I mean on the sea floor as any higher than the sea floor becomes the open ocean which should be quite). after about 100m all you hear are bonesharks. and after 200m even that becomes rare... the ocean feels very empty when you stray too far from the life pod. I didn't mean there should be more creatures in the shallows as there are already quite enough there but rather in places where it looks like there should be life but there just isn't. I agree with you totally that the devs have made an epic job with the sounds so far, but in my opinion places like the Grassy Plateaus could use more creatures with unique sounds. but the creatures should be all unique and spread over the entire ocean logically rather than illogically in one place. though the open ocean should be near dead and only rarely have a creature like the reaper or emperor there to make the sound that will fill your heart with dread

The dolphins, believe it or not, are most likely peepers... Especially if you're trying to catch one at the time ;)

I think the peepers make the noise, when i spawned 500 of them...My speakers exploded with sound. :)
