Windsurfing in SN. The player could travel along the surface at a much faster pace than swimming/submarining -- with the caveat of not being able to bring along their sub. The player could deploy/undeploy the sail at will, allowing them to reach other areas quickly and go for a quick dive if desired. Initial implementation could have the player move at a constant speed. Later enhancements could utilize wind speed/direction, and allow for some tricks -- maybe even having some of the local fauna swim/fly along with the player.
P.S. I know scope creep is an issue already, and don't expect to see this. However, I think it could be a fun metagame.

Interesting idea, though I don't know how useful it would be since if I"m exploring I'm usually looking for something specific along with good resources (EX: Specific: Copper, GResources: Salt), so I always am looking underwater for something interesting. Just me though, I"m sure if I got bored eventually I'd like to use that idea
