Sea Creatures and Behavior Ideas Dump!~ let's help the Dev to come up KrayKray sea creatures!~

Let me start this by saying that most of the sea creatures in the games I see so far.... they already move like they belong there! Great job to animation/AI team!~~ however.. they are still too "earthlike" we need to make "otherworldly" creatures too!~ here is a thread that we can all come in and make up bunch of Creatures!~ (pictures too if we could) and Devs can pick what ideas they like to implement...

Glowing Shock Lancer Fish
Biome: "Depth"
In hi-pressure water where sun don't shine, this thin, glowing sharp double beak fish generates visible electric currents on it's beak to light up the water around it, killing anything small, irritates away anything large. When in danger it super charge the twin beaks, and actually shoots them out like a fork and stab-insert-shock it's target and runs for it, usually kills the predator as well... this creature is picky on food; will only eat certan small creatures that it "drive by" and killed, the large predator that was killed is left to rot, or eaten by other creatures. this fish like to hide behind deep sea rocks... beak will grow back in time (3-5 minutes?) but swims way faster with out them beak can be used as tool, creature it self is toxen, not good to eat, but can be used to create poisons, and this creature immune to electric based attack..

Remember, the behaviors of some creatures should interact with the player.
The player should become a part of the ecosystem over time, not stay separated.
Parasites should attach to the player.
    Scavengers should follow the player.
Some fish should swim near the player to seek protection from predators.
    ETC

They player interacts with the environment in a normal game.
Lets get subnautica to be a game where the environment interacts with the player.

Some real life examples would be barracuda, remora, and pilot fish.
Barracuda sometimes follow divers because they think the divers are larger predators and hope to get easy food.
Remora are the fish you usually see attached to sharks and have been known to attach to divers and pretty much anything big and moving.
Pilot fish are the fish you see following sharks around and have been known to follow divers.

    Jawhawk (Small predator/scavenger)
Biome: Around the safe shallows, but will follow predators deeper.
Usually residing in the shallows, this small predator will go down to the depths of kelp forests while following stalkers for a chance to scavenge what they leave behind.
This predator will follow any predator bigger than it for a chance at a free meal. It tends to sit back and wait for a slow moving, injured, or dead fish to show up, at which point it will dart out at speeds around 40 km/h to grab the meal and escape from danger quickly.

Some bigger predators purposefully leave food behind for Jawhawks in hopes that they will become accustomed to it and help the predator fight off enemies.
A benefit Jayhawks provide to predators is that they will eat parasitic entities off of the predator.

    Alien lobster WIP name mcgee
    Biome: Seafloor
A tasty creature which can live for very long times and walks around on the seafloor.
The older (bigger) ones tend to be deeper in the ocean and have no real maximum size they grow to.
Who knows, maybe there's one that has lived for 5000 years and has become so massive it could eat a person.

    Kraykray (totally not a crab)
    Biome: Pretty much everywhere
A mostly insignificant creature which scuttles about just hoping it doesn't get eaten.
The bigger ones tend to be deeper and can defend themselves with their large claws.
Small predators like the Jawhawk like to eat them as they are very tasty.

    Glowfish (dat creativity doe)
Biome: Shallows, but can follow creatures around to deeper parts of the ocean.
A lovely creature which glows brightly at night and in dark areas, however this is very detrimental to its own survival since it cannot protect itself, which is why it likes to search for a large creature that doesn't want to eat it. It will follow this creature around providing it light in dark areas allowing the creature to see in darker areas than it usually can and in return the creature provides protection.
It usually does not stray far from the shallows without protection.

Wip name sir darwinfish (it's a parasite (-HP))
Biome: Pretty much everywhere, but especially in kelp forests.
A nasty little pest that likes to latch onto larger creatures and feed off of the blood inside it.
It provides absolutely no benefit to the host and in groups can kill larger predators.
It can live outside of water as long as it has a host.

Wipname the third (another parasite (-H2O +O2))
    Biome: kelp forest
A curious little creature that latches onto larger creatures and feeds off of the hosts source of hydration as it only needs fresh water to survive, yet ironically cannot survive IN fresh water.
A benefit that they provide however is that they slowly oxygenate the blood in the host.
It can live outside of water as long as it has a host.

    Cleaning station (-parasites +HP)
    Biome: Shallows
Less of a creature and more of an area that many helpful creatures reside.
The creatures that reside around cleaning stations will eat parasites and dead skin off of larger creatures that stop and wait.
The large creatures won't eat any of the small helpful creatures due to them being helpful.
Things generally remain calm around cleaning stations no matter what kind of predators may lurk around.

    Regalian (it's a fish (-parasites))
    Biome: Shallows and Kelp Forest
A small creature that likes attaching harmlessly to bigger creatures for the free ride and to feed off of the parasites on them and scraps they leave behind.

The question is, which creatures will you form a bond with to help you survive?
It's not just swim up to a fish and left click to create friend either.
At most this could be done with parasites to put them on yourself, but if you're trying to get Jawhawks to follow you, you just have to let it happen when it does.

Will you allow parasites to cling on and change how you live? Forcing you to fend off the Jawhawks which just want to eat the parasites?
Or will your love for having an escort of Jawhawks prevent you from using the parasites?

Or would you rather not have parasites change how you live and not place your trust in Jawhawks that may or may not even help you fend off attackers?
Regalians will eat parasites off you and leave you otherwise alone.

My suggestion is... Baby animals!!! Every creature needs to breed!

There's some eggs modeled already. So i'm guessing theres gonna be babies.

Different sizes of life forms as well. Would be awesome if it'd be more than just the model scale though (maybe changes in textures).

I was seeing the eggs as well. Put some on the ground to see if anything happens but nope. I wonder what they'll do. :)

    Great suggestions though.

I like this idea. like dolphins in real life.

Also thats kinda that "shark" creatures are (stalker, lava lizard, weird oarfish crab thing..but i'm guessing the deeper you go the more deadly they are.)

Not just animals/aliens... plants can sometimes be interesting too like that plant in the current built "red Boomer fish pod"!~

    Purple glowing sea bush
    Biome: poison
It's what it looks to be... a purple bush with glowing purple berries on it... certain sea creatures will eat them, but that berry would turn these creatures in to craycray suicidal boomers, few creatures (dummer, smaller, naturally glowing) will eat them, and glow bright purple, will become hosts for the plant's seed, hanging around the bush, and will charge at any thing that it (the plan) deemed threatening... then, when those sea creatures get close enough, they go boom... kinda like Cordyceps, and by booming the host, the plant gets food, and pollens!

It would be very interesting to experience parasites that changed how you live. Perhaps one way for humans to survive on this planet is by entering a symbiotic relationship? Being the one scientist around, you'd have only yourself to experiment on. And if one of said parasites is decidedly lethal...

Anyway, I'm really interested in a few other aspects we may see in the future...particularly the DNA sampler with it's potential self-use and the possibility of huge, eldritch creatures lurking in the depths.

When i was quite a bit younger, at least 5 years ago i had an idea which was extremly similar to this game.
I had drawn many creatures for the marine life in the game and i have scrounged up some of the most fiting ones for Subnautica.
Here They are, their just images so any stats or traits can be added for whom evers liking.

    Link Below for the creatures.

    Deepstaria Solitaria
    giant telepathic Jelly Fish

enormous and colourful with many floating tentacles. if approached it will start flashing in colourful lights. it stays in the depths but eventually one night rises to the surface.
it will then elevate out of the water glowing intensely, producing a music like sound while it drops hundreds of glowing larvae into the water. The Medusa itself will elevate further and further until it vanishes into space.the larvae that survive will evolve into polyps attached to creatures . they eventually evolve into small medusa and finally into the big version.
nothing is known about their mating habits, they are solitary and probably asexual.

prolonged telepathic contact with the Deepstaria Solitaria might reveal interesting or very confusing things to more evolved creatures. it is a peaceful creature that feeds on plankton but will defend itself with telepathic-shocks that induce fear when attacked.

the larvae are small (hand-sized) worms that glow yellowish they dont mind to be eaten by other creatures because then they will nest inside the host and eventually create a polyp on the hosts skin. the polyp is a transparent mushroom like knob with some tentacles sticking out.
after a while the polyp will morph into a small Medusa and detach from the host. the small medusa is a transparent blob with short tentacles that emits a bright light. it will stay around the host for prolonged time sometimes until the hosts death.then it vanishes into the depth and eventually morphs into a big Deepstaria Solitaria

if the player eats a larvae he will be infected with a polyp (knob) that grows on his skin. after a while detaches and serves as light source following the player. :)

Maybe some creature that has camouflage like an octopus/cuddlefish?

It seems like the diversity of life excludes large prey and predators

I think they're focusing on mechanics before they add all the massive creatures -- look at the reefback for example. It's just a massive creature that floats around and does nothing (and is quite glitchy too)-- therefore they are starting with creatures that are simpler and easier to make and change (at least I think so). Baby steps ;)

Dude, don't do drugs! You'll end up all jelly yourself. Cool idea though

I like the idea of those 60 foot long tube creatures, they would really add a sense of terror (Underwater alien boa constrictor anyone? )

If you dig around a bit in Cory's concept art as found on the Trello board and the media page you will find some creatures much like the ones you suggested.

My favorites (Scariest) are the Whipscorpion, the Pink Underwing moth, and that wierd Jellyfish with eyes (Stygiomedusa gigantea).

There are squids that hold onto their eggs in a type of sheet, such as the Gonatus onyx. It's rather captivating.

Try the vampire squid it's cool looking

I'm quite fond of that big purple eel like thing that is used as the site's border graphic.
Other than that, Manta Rays are incredibly cool, and if somehow you could alienate one and use that as a deep sea creature... =)

Like a giant Manta Ray, with a face on the underside?
Or a Manta Ray / Comb jellyfish hybrid?

That reminds me. In the N64 game "Shadows of the Empire", there was a level called the 'Sewers of Imperial City'. This place was a living hell.
There were these blobs of flesh and tendrils called Dianoga's. It took a lot of courage to fight these things and the boss was an eldritch abomination!

I'm not sure which is worse. This, or spending 3-4 hours, stuck inside Jabu Jabu's belly. At least I completed the latter.

^ those Dianoga's are awesome inspiration imo, I think Subnautica would benefit from all spectrums of atmospheres, from terror to awe, and all that :D

Oh, and if you've played "Super Paper Mario" for the Wii, chances are you've met the 'Underhand'.

Still not as scary as the Dianoga's though.

I believe what would serve this games ends quite well is to derive inspiration from the pelagic Cnidarians such as Praya dubia
Or Physalis "the portugese man`o war"
    https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4010/4526330308_c1b9930b91_z.jpg

Floating invertebrates like these with swaying tentacles could serve to make visits to the surface or near surface much more interesting.
you could also program smaller fish like organisms to school near these, or better yet have the Surface floating invertebrates occasionally catch and eat them..

Another area i think could strengthen this game is the presence of Medusoid animals "jellyfish like animals" which pulse and structurally give "are soft" when things make contact with them. you could have a wide range of sizes and dimensions for such pulsing animals.
here are some examples of what i mean.
  • AcanlordAcanlord Canada Join Date: 2015-01-02 Member: 200569Members
I should also point out that such animals as these wouldn't be hostile. they would simply move around in small or large groups trailing their tentacles behind them occasionally capturing prey. If you were to touch the tentacles you would be poisoned or in some way harmed, but otherwise these animals would leave you alone and would only serve as a significant threat in large numbers OR if there were a Truely GIGANTIC pulsing animal near by.

^That's a good idea to keep the Surface not TOO easy

I would love to see a huge mantis shrimp, it has this hammer thing that swings the speed of gun bullets underwater and can smash open crabs/hard shells

Here is a video of the creature:

"Human eyes can detect 3 cones of vision while the mantis shrimp can detect 16 of them"

"The Mantis Shrimp can deliver a blow with 1500 Newtons of force"
