Why Are Hive Rooms So Big...

<div class="IPBDescription">And marine spawn so small?</div> On average, the marine spawn is roughly half the size of all hives on the map combined and averaged. Which makes no sense because the marines need LOTS of space and the aliens need practically nil.

My most hated:

Viaduct (This room is big enough for a jumbo jet)

Refinery (This massive room with NO BACTERIA ON WALLS has a tiny hive up in the corner?)


I don't mind if they're big, but are full of themed objects/interesting mapping... but when they're 90% empty...

    Big marine spawns would mean turrets i its center and a lot of dead skulks around. You must give the aliens the chance to attack the base so short distances to CC are needed <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->. (On eclipse if turrets are placed correctly you want make it far). On the other hand you need to give the marines thee chance to evade spawning skulks and kill the hive(leads to spawn camp but if you let them in your hive you shall loose)

    Morph into fade on ns_eclipse, then go into great viaduct and blink up to the ceiling@!!@!

    First time i did it i was like ROTFLMAO when i finally splatted on the floor turning into a puddle of alien guts.

    Pretty sure thats what he meant...but yea now that i think about it the aliens do have a really big freaking area for the hive and the marines don't have much...think Nancy. I think Eclipse has a nice sized marine spawn though

    The only marine base I find way too small is on the map with Noname/Port Engine Room/Subspace hives (can't remember the name). After a few buildings plus phase gate have gone up you can't get around with having to clamber over the various buildings.

    Most other marine bases are fairly spacious.

    I don't have a problem with any of the marine spawn area sizes, the only gripe I have with a few marine area is when the CC is located on another level, seperated by a latter or lift (ala Caged or Bast) it makes it hard to defend from skulks and other nasties getting back there.

    If anything I think too many of the hive rooms are too small. Hives like Cargo Bay on nothing, or Feedwater on Bast have such a small area, it really makes it hard for the marines to attack, especially with jetpacks. This could go either way, making smaller hive rooms to prevent jetpackers, or bigger hives rooms to accomodate them. Either way, I don't think being too big is much of an issue.

    personally i like big hive rooms because of the atmosphere... it gives u a feeling that "you're finally there" and to kick hippy ****...

    I find no problem with Feedwater though. Too me, the hives on ns_hera are the nicest (atmospheric-wise)

    NS_Hera has the best atmosphere of any map in my opinon.

    heh yea i know. The size really only matters when the game is just starting and the skulks have to run in. By the time they get onos size doesn't matter lol

    the main reason is so they can fit all the entities in. Each hive room has to fit 16 spawns (32 x 32 x 72) and there has to be 128 units between each spawn and each spawn also has to be 64 units from the wall. As well as the spawns the hive rooms have to have room for a hive(obviously) which is 256 x 256 x 384 and if the mapper chooses to put the hive's node in the same room theres another 64 x 64 x 128 (just so it doesn't stick into walls)

    If you take all this into consideration it isn't that hard to see why most hives are bigger than the marine spawns. As for the massive hugeness of Viaduct and Refinary, the size of those was purely for looks

    Well, since marines can build an infinite number of turrets, while aliens are limited to 6 pretty much in the entire area of the hive, I think the marine bases should be small. They're already big enough for huge turret farms as they are...imagine the massive turret farm you would see if there was a marine start as big as The Great Viaduct on ns_nothing.

    It pretty much evens out, marines can have an advatage from bigger hive rooms. But, the aleins have an advantage with the smaller marine start.
