Not-really-newbie-but-kinda-newbie Questions

Hi, I've been playing NS since the HL1 mod days and I have support NS2 during the pre-ordering as well. Had a gaming hiatus due to fatherhood duties but now i'm back.

Some questions:
1) Is it normal for Steam to ask me to purchase the Deluxe Edition? Although I do already have the Black Armour and Deluxe DLC installed.
2) Are there any special badges available for people like me, who had pre-ordered?
3) How do I access the armour customisation "software"?

Look forward to any help! :)

    1) I don't know if that's normal since I didn't preorder. It should stop doing it soon or if you click "Not interested".
    2) No, there are no badges for pre-ordering. You do, however, have that gorgeous black armor which should be more than enough.
    3) To access the "Customize Player" menu you need to be connected to a server, local or otherwise. (I.E. sandbox mode works too.)

It's possible that it's a Steam bug, but you can check your DLC under the DLC tab when you right click the properties of NS2 just to make sure. Don't forget to enable them, I've had some games recently disable some of my DLC.

Unfortunately, there are no badges for the pre-orders like you and me, but you can customize the ones you have on Hive by linking your Steam and forum account. Badges are also available from the World Championship, which has since ended, and also the Reinforcement Program.

The armor customization is available on the menu screen of NS2 once you join a game under "Customize." You'll have options to not only change your armor, but also a should decal, gender, and alien skins too!

Everyone that pre-ordered got their account upgraded to Deluxe and got a spare copy to give away. I would say this is a problem with steam, might me worth trawling their forums.

I am curious why you can only customize your Armour / alien choices while in a game rather than on the menu, bit odd.

It's some sort of technical limitation. I don't remember exactly what, but it was mentioned when the feature was first released.

To my understanding, It's because to give you a preview of the skin it has to display the marine/alien model, and to do that it has to do some stuff with stuff thats only done when you join a server because ssshhh.

@MuckyMcFly‌ More or less what @meatmachine‌ said. Just a bit more detail, I think it was the renderer isn't active until you are in game. Hence you need to be in a "game" before your model is displayed.

An in depth explanation of why you can't use it in the menu. It's a technical limitation.

You could still reenable the old cheap costumization in the options to remove this comfusion once and forall. Unless you're working on overcoming the technical limitations in the near future :D

@andeelym , did you find out what it was that was causing the problem?
