Knucklehead Commanders

Rant about them
Ever have a commander that really aggravated you, but no matter how hard you tried would not leave the chair? Give them a suggestion and they lash at you saying "I'm the commander shut up noob" or some other type of childish insult? Share your stories here. But remember this isn't about beginner commanders, I'm talking about knuckleheaded ones. Don't confuse the two please.

I suppose I've been a knuckle head commander, I told my marines to 'rush the fades', and they 'give us HMG', and I said 'no'.

your supposed to give you life for the commander .. its sort of the point ...

the game isn't to see who can get the most kills, its to win. If it takes someone 3 lives to kill a fade with a LMG, its damn well worth it. Hell, you can probably even take it if you get enough people to commit.

But, hey - what do I know?

Most annoying thing ever is... ( pub play ) and frankly it has happend quite few times.. Marines doing well with upgrades holding the fades of their secured hive till HA HMG patrol rides in... Great.. we get together and seige the second hive... Exellent were gonna win.. then.. only then... do you watch the entire team fall completly out of ballance. people whining in the base for specific weapons taking all the time in the world... when you finnaly get everyone toghter to seige the last hive you find that they took the one you had first... and when you finnaly get everyone together for that one.... and so and so on

quit server and hope the human speicis die out along with those knuckleheads

I had one com who started off well on Caged. He kept me back in base, and the rest secured generator, then ventilation, then base again. Then he secured them some more. And then some more. And more. And more. Guy had a serious turret fetish! It was best summed up by a recently-joined alien saying "Jesus! Where'd all these turrets come from?" Meanwhile, the aliens are begging us to finish them off, and we're begging for the tools to do it. And so, more turrets.......we ejected him eventually, and the new com found that he HAD made all the nessecary upgrades, just never dropped anything except turrets.

Yeah, on some public servers, the marines are just downright nasty. Being commander, even if you're doing a good job, is a constant barrage of insults, demands, questions, and what if's....

It especially irks me when the comm is doing a good job communicating, using voice com, acting responsible - yet is still ejected because he decides to get all upgrades before passing out the heavy stuff... The commanders have the option of choosing different routes, but marines on public servers never let this variety take place - they always want the same routine game over and over.

IMO, commander should be able to slap marines if they get too rowdy. I do like to pin them with a turret if they really get on my nerves and wont follow the most basic of orders (Go defend teh hive, then u can get a better gun) But usually comms get booted because a group of say 3 marines get together and think they know best. then they squablle over whos going comm cos they still want their shiny HMG, meanwhile a noob jumps in, builds 3 command centres in base, and everyone F4's. Ahhh the joys of pubs.

I hate commanders who don't give orders, even waypoints. Some games I'll stand around waiting for several minutes, requesting orders, and eventually I just go off following other marines.

Had a com yesterday who seemed to love dropping things on people. I just had built an ip when he dropped an armory. Around 1 min later he allmost drops a tf on a friend of mine, little while later he allmost dropped a turret on him. You start to wonder if its acidents

Oh yeah, the joy of pubs.

I love it when someone hops in, makes 3 comm chairs and leaves.

It's funny when some of the people on the marines start building the comm chairs, half of them not even knowing what they are doing.

Soon it gets pitiful when they get rushed and find themselves unable to spawn in, and thier allies all have hit f4...

When i command i quite often find that there is just the one marine who seems to act like s/he's 10 or something. Nothing you ever do is right, and if you dont concentrate all of your efforts on keeping them alive , you must be a bad comm. a good way to sort these players out is to send them either on suicide missions (which they rarely listen to anyway) or build on them.

Other than that, ive found that most people enjoy me commanding (especially when im actually trying to win a proper game) and we get on pretty well. ive always found that if you get on well with the marines that you're commanding, they a) follow orders better b) work together better and c) shoot better . mainly because they believe that you know what you're doing and have a lot more confidence in themselves.

    anyways, only a short post,
    Anim.

BWAHAHAHAHHAAHAHH That's hilarious, and SOOO true.

I was comming a game, we had 2 noobs, holy hell. "cmdr shotgun" "omg commander sucks eject him".. jesus, some guys on the team defended me.... another game "comm give me jetpack and shottie i will take down a hive"... we had the resources, so I gave him toys, but then i say "No, you won't get me a hive, you'll stick the hell with the other guys and go together" and he's like "... okay." hehe.

another one is calling me a noob the whole friggin game, we're slowly winning, but we're always pretty short on resources since skulks keep eating my towers (good tactic). The noob "how do i get guns" me: "I have to give them to you. and guess who's badside you're on?" "oh."

anyways, yeah, i've had some dumb commanders, I hate the ones that drop turrets like mad. One was just a turret nut. I'm like "COMMANDER! Turrets won't protect a base!" one map, our base is overrun, we move to generator hive, it gets overrun, we move to vent hive, commander builds like 6 turrets in front of the doors to vent hive, the CC and spawn portals are down below. I'm like "cmdr, do you realize skulks will run RIGHT by those friggin turrets?" He didn't answer, I quit the game, i'm pretty sure how that game ended...

Jesus, turrets do not secure locations guys. They will keep skulks from munching on stuff easily, that's it.

I also love it when the commander is using a microphone and you can't understand them because it's cutting in and out or it's not loud enough or whatever. People will be saying "I can't understand you." yet they continue to refuse to use waypoints or type anything. There have been several games where I THINK (can't be sure of course) that the comm was p/o'ed at me for not following order after I told him repeatedly that I couldn't understand a word he was saying.

I dont use a mic when I command.

hell, I hardly ever use a mic period.

and I do just fine commanding. All you need are waypoints. You can issue any order you can say just by right clicking on something.

Right click on ground - Waypoint
Right click on building - Build/Defend
Right click on enemy - Attack

for those times I dont actually need to say something, I just type it. I can type rather fast, so its no real problem.

I learned a long time ago not to use voice comm when commanding. The simple fact is I get down right mad when people dont follow orders and I would yell constantly into the mic. Leaves you with a sore voice after a while ...

I drop a lot of buildings on people. Not because I mean to, but because, for some odd reason, all NS player's are finicky. I'll want to drop a building in a particular corridor, and there will be 2 or 3 marines in the corridor. All of them are moving, stopping rarely to look around or shoot things. I usually wait for the marines to get to their waypoints, stop long enough for me to drop a building, then drop one. Problem is, there's ALWAYS one guy who spazzes out and moves randomly under the building, and thus gets trapped and has to suicide. It's much worse when it's a HAHMG than when it is a naked marine, and is always quite annoying.

Lesson of the day: If your commander orders you to a particular area, especially to a corridor, and you expect a turret factory, phase gate, or something of the like to be dropped, please, stand still. You can do it.

A minor pet peeve I've got as a commander is that for some reason my commands to my marines *just won't go*. I right click on the ground, nothing happens.

Sometimes it's map related. For example, sometimes a wall will get in the way, and apparently water is a commander no-man's land.

Other times, just doesn't seem to work for no particular reason at all. Order just won't go through.

Reminds me of the Turret Factories In South Loop bug.

Usually the problem with "bad comms" is bad marines. I'm a fairly good comm, and I'm trying to secure 2 hives. But when 1 person is defending 2 hives, and 6 marines are sitting at base "Gimme a 1337 Ub3r gun comm!" "Heavy armor so I can run and die and commit suicide please" Comming is just discouraging. Everyone yells and cusses and gets angry and wants HMGs so they can waste your rescources.
  • AhnteisAhnteis teh Bob Join Date: 2002-10-02 Member: 1405Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
    Comm today.

We had 2 hives -- barely.
He gave out HA/HMG (no welders) and told us to get out of base. (Where you want us to go?) GET OUT OF BASE YOU MORONS. WHY ARE YOU SITTING HERE?

About 3 minutes later, they had both hives and about 15 later, we were dead.

If you're going to command, COMMAND! Team coordination is far more important then item dispensing.

Very true I was an ok comm till they basically took away siege. After that n00b's had no way of having a chance in hell of doing anything except get lucky and kill a skulk.

n00b's don't help game play much but if you lie/threaten them they will get the job right eventually. So eventually I gave up my command job and became a commanders best friend instead.

I'm the marine who listens to orders and follows with out question, not to mention can kill 3-4 skulks before I get overtaken. I wonder if there’s any west coast servers that you guys play at that I might be able to join? I would LOVE to play with a good comm now and then.
