<div class="IPBDescription">Some Sounds 4 u mapping guys</div> Hi guys.
I had a little time and made a small pack of sounds one could use in a NS map to create some tension or atmosphere.
please note that this pack is more or less a "beta" (createt the sounds in about half an hour) and some sounds are kinda experimental (but who knows if anyone finds a way to use them anyway).
All the Sounds are 64khz MP3 format and may be used free as long as:
1.) the map is for Natural Selection.
2.) you give me a small credit in your readme or something.
3.) you give me a link to your map so i can see/hear how the sounds feel like in play.
And please give me some feedback on wich sounds are good useable and wich are not (and why), so i know what direction to go when doing a second pack.

I made some of my own sounds for my map Ns_Titan 6, and it sounds pretty cool. I'll be sure to download these though.
The others sound more like the belong in a techno song (though I love techno and it sounded great) lots of talent here, good work.
If we use them should we just slap ur name somewhere?
The alarms and generators are great. I may use them and will give proper credit. Thanks!

Most of these sound more like background music than ambient area sounds. But as background music, they're very good! Especially number 7 ... I can imagine that as the background audio in a sci-fi thriller, great quality.

Yes you're right, most of the sounds are not really "Ambient" sounds but kind of background music.
But i tried them in the map i'm currently working on (still planning/alpha stage... messing around with the different ns entities and so on... so no screens yet) and the can add quite a bit to atmosphere... Try using the ambient loops in dark hallways or corridors <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Just read the very first posting here or the readme comming with the zip package <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
It would be nice if you put my name somewhere in your map description, the readme or something.

Well in fact i did all the sounds with a softsynth that i use when making trance/dance music (no, i'm not a good musician *g*) and some filter effects.
If i had to put the souds from the pack into a special genre i think ambient (in fact this is why tha pack is named that way), triphop or somethink like that would fit best.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
some of those mp3s dont loops too well, you should truncate those mp3s a bit to make them loop.
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Most of the sounds are supposed to fade to silence and then start again, but i think some sounds really would have needed some more attention.
But as mentioned before this pack is more or less a beta (created it just using some prefabs of the softsynth, some filters ond my keyboard) to see if such a pack is accepted by other mappers.
Due to the feedback i think i'll be working on a second pack.. probably featuring more "real ambience" sound but also some of the "more like background music" sounds.
If anyone has some special request just PM or mail me and i'll see if i can help.

Edit: all your typos are belong to us
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->wait, how are you typing if your hands are useless? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
i can grasp stuff, and stab a keyboard, but the fine motor control is gone, and my hands dont do what i want them to do usually. its like tying loads of eleastic bands around your fingers, placing your hands in a freezer for 3 hours and then trying to do something quite intricate like a jigsaw puzzle.
Anyways, I happen think map-specific music should be encouraged, and that ingame music should be disabled by default with the mod or something. It's quite a problem to take a map the extra mile when you can't throw in anything musical.
I oughta try playing with music enabled and see what it sounds like.
I would post a funny picture or something to perk this thread up... but I'd probably be banned or told off for going off topic....!
Several of these sounds are the presets on Fm7 and Absynth, and possibly some other computer synth generating programs. I know because I've created my own sounds for my maps using the same program, so if I've used some similar sounds, don't say I ripped them off!
That's not to say that they aren't good btw... they're very well put together, good job <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Some are presets but most are edited (mostly edited for performace, so there are only little changes in the actual sound, but quite a large change in the behavior of the instrument and the performance needed. I had to do this when my machine went low on esources when working on a song featuring 4 Absynths and 6 FM7s)
I'm crrently working on some sounds using a combination of an custom Absynth-Sound, a tubescream effect and some filters... sounds pretty weird but kewl <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Other sound will be created combining some FX-Samples with Filters... there are almost unlimited possibilities.
And, as said in an earlier posting, i someone would like some special sound, i'll try to help out, just PM or mail me.

Well, i could possibly write some intrumental tracks for NS, and probably will, but as long as mappers have no abbility to decide if and what music should be played (at least i don't know of any possibility) they will be more or less useless.
When i've done a small track i'll post a link here and perhabs send it to the NS team... perhaps they'll like it (although i don't think i can be any match for the guy who did the two trac commin with ns).
I do this all for fun anyway.

HOORAY!
I have had FM7 for quite some time, but I've never been able to record the sounds I create with it because there is no built in record feature. What do you use to record this? Is there something I could download?

Well there are (at least) two ways to record the sounds of the FM7.
1.) You can use the FM7 as an VST-Instrument in a wide range of professional and semi-professional recording software such as reason, fruity loops, cubase, and so on.
This is the best (probably only) way to use the FM7 if you intend to use it for making music and not just recording some FM7 sounds.
2.) If you do not want to use the FM7 in a whole song you can use this little "workaround":
tell your windows mixer (the small speaker in your taskbar) to use the "stereo mixer" for recording instead of the microphone.
Then start a recording tool of your choise (i use Cool Edit 2000 for such things, but even the windows wav-recorder whould do), start the recording and play your FM7 in standalone mode.
The downsides of this method are:
- It's LIVE recording, so if you do a little mistake, you'll have to start again.
- U have to make sure that the will be no other sounds from windows itself (taskbar sounds and so on) or any other programs (i guess you wouldn't like an ICQ-"Uh-Uh" in your sound <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> )
- You can't use any live-effects.
I strongly suggest you use the first way (VST) if you want to record things from the FM7. This way you got far more control and can use additional effects without any problem.
Hope I could help you.

I think I tried using VST before, but it cacked up (yes, I said cacked).
I will try it again, and if that fails, the second approach should work.
Thanks man <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Your welcome.
There were a lot of changes on Fruity Loops within the last versions and i have never experienced any critical errors unsing VST-Instruments or VST-Effects since using V3.3 or later.
The only problem that i regulary run into is the lack of free resources <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Other News:
I got a request for some rain and water sounds for a custom map.
This package will not be finished until middle of Feburary (if not later) because i have exams and a lot of learning to do these days, but if anyone else wants this small pack i will probably make it an "public" pack.
Work on the Ambient Pack #2 is still going, but don't expect it being released before Feburary due to the reasons given above.
