Failing to connect to server causes IP lease to expire

Hi all,

Dxdiag will follow, but I have quite a strange issue. I get kicked off the net if I fail to connect to a server and upon inspection of the events log, the game is causing me to lose my IP lease (The DHCP Server sent a "DHCPNACK" message). Anyone else seen or experienced something like this? If I connect successfully then there's no issue.

Wow, thats a really interesting bug. I've never even heard of software causing your Internet provider to reset your IP. I think your best bet is to call your Internet Provider and ask them if a game could do this. Are you playing on a router? Do all of your devices loose internet as well? Have you tried bypassing your router and plugging straight in?

I can't imagine any packet sent from NS2 would cause your IP to reset. Very bizarre.

It's just my computer as far as I know, and in order to get a new IP I have to reset the router (i.e. off for 20 seconds so it forgets its IP allocation). I am wired directly into my router though.

DHCP HACK as a potential cause seems to be wrong - it isn't reporting it the last 3 times. NSII seems to disrupt my connection with the router if it fails to connect and can only be restored by me releasing and renewing the ip address (through cmd). I tried a training match at one point and it said authorization failed, which was great...

Do you have any potential explanations or solutions? Quite sad I'm not able to play your excellent game without risk of being kicked off my net :(

I am not sure what "sending reliable 0" is entailing, but it seems almost like maybe a packet is not getting sent out of the network properly.

Therefore it is retrying every 150ms but does not seem to be having much success? At least that is what I take from above without having any insight as to your problem..

Have you checked your router firmware and that there are no outgoing restrictions?

Nearly a year after having this problem I found the ultimate cause - a firewall setting in the router's advanced settings. Due to the nature of connecting to servers in a number of games, it kicks you off the internet when trying to connect to too many servers as it believes a DoS attack is occuring. I have a ZyXel router and could solve this by editing the firewall thresholds to a higher level before kicking users off the net. Just in case you get cases like this in the future - it could be the router being paranoid!

Though, if you read the 1st page of that link i provided a year ago, it would have mentioned firewall settings for those routers that are easily flooded from too many requests

In particular for your router, what was the name of the setting? (for documentation purposes)

I didn't know my router had a firewall and I think there's a large proportion of us who assume when you mention "firewall settings" that you're talking about 3rd party software or Windows Firewall, rather than flooding protection. Sadly took me 2 years to really understand what you were saying, so I guess at the time your post didn't go into enough specifics and/or didn't explain what you meant
