<div class="IPBDescription">Just a little whine</div> Nothing more annoying than an admin abusing his powers while playing. I got kicked from a server last night for merely asking for a welder at the start of a game (so I could seal some vents). The commander (who was also the admin) said I wasn't "contributing to the team" - like, thirty seconds into the game. Later I was playing as alien, and managed to turn the whole game around by destroying the comm chair. Again, the admin/comm kicked me immediately, presumably for spoiling his fun.

If it's his server, then I guess he can do what he likes and we're just guests. Still, you should be polite to your guests...

I was playing a server last night and some guy joined and started using the Aliens appearing as Marines and using Marines Weapons exploit.

Turns out the guy was the server admin.

As you say, their server, their rules. The hardware, bandwidth, and software setup are nontrivial, so any time you're playing on someone else's server, say thanks. And if they don't want you playing there, for whatever reason, you won't. If they want to abuse all their players, however, they'll soon find that they're playing alone.

For every admin who set up a server just for the power trip of slaying entire teams at a time there's another who just wants to have a fun place to play the game. Find another server and move on.

Some people who run servers also happen to be making up for something of theirs that is really, really tiny. They get off on screwing with the people that play on their server. Whatever, eventually the good players who are around enough to know which servers have crappy admins will stop playing on those servers, and he'll always have a server full of noobs. All you can really do is go play elsewhere.

But yeah, I totally agree that admins that kick or ban for no good reason are jerks. The only good reason to kick or ban a person, in my opinion, is if they are cheating/exploiting a bug, or are trying to annoy everyone on the server (grief playing.) I've been known to let people play on my server even when they are constantly telling me that I suck, and other more offencive words along those lines, without kicking them unless they start to cheat or ruin the other players enjoyment of the game. It is just that, a game, definatly not worth throwing a fit over.

I think the admins that kick people need to have a good look why they kick people. Yer fine if its there server, but if its a public server thats well known u r just losing customers. so why bother.

yesterday i was playing on a server with a few guys, who were in the clan that owns the server, and they are guys i've known for a while too, and i'm marine and i notice the blue boarder around the resource count and useless minimap are blinking

it's not until it's gone and i fire and notice theres no muzzle flash... or gun model... check the console and confirmed it, someone had done a command on my client to turn off r_drawviewmodel, and a repeated toggling of it could have caused my hud boarder to blink

it stopped for a while, we played some two on two europa, twas fun, then it happened again

then a map later when people started joining, i was alien, and i saw in the dead spectator mode we had just put up mantinence hive, i spawn and a a few seconds later notice that the hive is done "what the hell?! how'd that hive finish so fast?!" checked the console, it was FILLED with sv_cheats toggles

and a little later i'm on hera, in the joyous room that is mantinence, drop down right behind a guy, make the landing roar, he doesn't even notice, click to bite and... nothing click some more.. nothing, make sure bite is selected... still nothing... they guy finally shoots me and takes me down to 10 hp, run away, finally i can bite it was pretty obvious someone unbound my mouse1

the really crappy part is i've known these guys for a long time, and really want to believe them when they say they aren't doing it... is it possible their server or admin mod got hacked?

I agree with the sentiment that if a aserver admin is a jerk, just move on to another server. I am concerned, however, by what appears to be a marked increase in server admin abuse on pubservers. For example, I was recently kicked simply because I killed the same player three times in about 2 minutes (turns out he was the admin.) In a more outrageous case, a server admin kicked the marine commander because the marines attacked a hive early in the game (interesting to note - the marines did not kill the hive, they were all wiped out - but the commander was kicked anyway for having the nerve to attack the hive.) One last case - as marines we killed a hive, and I was tasked by my commander to stay in the hive to prevent reoccupation by the aliens. After about 2 minutes, I was kicked for by a server admin for "camping".

One last comment: in all three cases above, the admin that kicked me was playing on the other side. I guess its particularly rare for an admin to kick someone from his own team.

Admins out there: thank you for all you do in giving us an environment in which to play. But don't ruin it. You can play alien - you can play marine- but don't try to play God. As I understand it, the job has already been filled.

This may in fact be some kind of glitch. I too have expierenced the same thing but I have noticed it usually happens in rooms full of action. Ill be running along choming Marines, more Marines show up and all of sudden my controls get all funky. Move right is replace with jump, move left does nothing, attack doesnt work, scoreboard wont go away and so on. The first 3 times I had this happen I was like "WTF!? Cheats?" but the last time it happened it happened on a server that has a cheat protection and is run by fair non-abusive admins. I no longer think its a cheat but some kind of glitch instead. Then again your case may be different and it may well have been a cheat especially if you consider the other stuff going on with the hives and such.

I have and will continue to kick people from the servers I have admin to if I feel that they have a bad attitude. Generally, I am an easy going guy (don't laugh if you're reading this and know me <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'> ) I don't kick people for "being the second gorge" or for killing me. I will kick people for voice spamming and being generally arguementitive. I play this game for fun and to relax, if some peoples idea of having fun is being disruptive, expect the boot. As an admin, you have the responsibility to the players to keep the game fun and pleasent, and you remove those who would disrupt the game.

yup, once my fellow clan member went gorge to build one res tower, then he would go back (7 on our team, admin was the only other gorge).
the admin imediatly kicked him off, and he came back on, and we both asked whty he had been kicked, thinking it was server bug. The admin said it was becuse of his gorging, and we were pretty madl. My freind was again kicked and i sais "hmmm do i smell admin abuse?" And then he started to do some really bad ****- i started to say things i wasn saying, and he made it look like i was hacking. I shut off my computer, and when i went to play some more ns later that day, i found that the entire game had been bugged, as well as my freinds. We had to totaly re-install Half-life.

always make your configs read only, ryan, it keeps admins from tampering with them, which sounds like what happened to you... unless theres some way to skrew with clients other than executing commands using admin mod... but then i'd blame whoever put that kind of abusable power in admin mod
