need some
Just to start with: Im not a "new" Player. I Play NS now for some several Weeks... kinda 1.02... As Marine and Kharaa both sides. Sometimes I got my good day, sometimes I got my bad day being a grunt/Skulk etc. But I think I got the games main rules.

But the hell, as soon as I try to command all goes down the drain! If its not me, what is really seldom, the rines just run off in several directions. If they cant get up a phase gate.. well no comment to that.

Wtf am I doing wrong? I send them to secure a hive fast, some rines keep running there, some get there. I place a phase, they get killed afterwards and the phase gets eaten. Damn I always loose the view of the map and the battle! Not to mention the results if several requests come from all over the map, Skulk attacks everywhere and Marines shouting at you what the hell you are doing...

I know there are freakin good comms out there. Played under some. But how did YOU get over this phase? Any tips? I´d like to command and not being yelled at after 3 mins...

Must be the marines cause i always get the PG built.
tell them so stick together and guard hive, make sure u have 2-4 for base rush aswell. have u tried building comm chair first so u dont wast res building 2 bases up. that way u can get turretss at hive not just a PG with marines trying to guard it.

Was just an example... somehow I dont have the real overview needed to win. Perhaps cause after the long time I grunted around, I know the loopholes and passages... but I don´t know the strategic sight from the chair...
If I am ordered to move to the XXX Hiv, I know where I have to go. If a marine calles for a phase gate at XXX Hive, I begin to scroll around in search for that hive... Perhaps I really should go to Bots again... if someone else has some tips, I´ll gladly listen.

Use the mini-map. It will save you, many, many, many times.

Basically, when you click your mouse on the mini-map, your command view will automatically take you there. If you have a building, it will appear as a blue spot. Resource nodes appear as white. Marines show up as green spots. Aliens turn up as red spots. Also, keep in mind that running your mouse over marines will show you their names.

If you use the minimap, you can quickly zoom all over the place without delay. If you get a request for a resource node, scan for a white spot with a green spot nearby, and click on it to zoom to the request. If a player requests a TF near a hive, search for a green spot that's remotely near a hive. If you have no idea where the person is, click rapidfire on green spots until you find him. Usually, the player will give you his location, which will help you identify him; if he doesn't, just scan your mouse over the player to identify his name.

It takes practice (with humans, not bots ), but after a while, you'll learn to use the mini-map to quickly jump around the map and respond to your marines. Oftentimes, I'll surprise my marines with the sheer quickness to which I react to them. If you are idle, jump around the green spots on your mini-map and heal any injured marines you see; I guarantee that'll get you some compliments.

For the hive problems, keep in mind that 1 player is easy pickings for a skulk. If you have 1 player building a base in a hive, I wouldn't expect much out of him. Whenever possible, get at least 3 people to build a hive (2, if the server is small). Builders always need cover; when in good servers, a lone builder will alwys get killed...and usually before he gets a phase up. If you have a team of marines all get killed while trying to build a phase gate in a hive, don't worry about it - they just suck.

Losing hives doesn't mean the end of the game. If you have 1 hive, you're still ok. People often lose sight of the OTHER important part of marine strategy....securing resources. When commanding, think this way: secure hives first, resource points second. Hives are preferred, since they are strategic and have resource nodes in them. But if the aliens have a firm grip on the hive, work on getting as many resource nodes as possible. Secure key points (i.e. resources in passageways from occupied hives to your base,) get them defended with turrets, then build undefended turrets in less key locations (i.e. between your base and a hive you have, or between your base and another defended resource point). If there's a double resource node, TAKE IT. Once you have a good amount of resources (4-5), start to tech your marines up. Once the aliens have fades, you should have HA and/or HMG's - and you'll be in for a relatively fair fight. And if you have a majority of resources, then the aliens won't be able to get as many fades, giving you the advantage.

That's all the advice I have to give. Good luck.

From what I'm reading, I think you have some horrible grunts..

A good commander needs a good group of marines.

Good group of marines need a good commander.

If you don't have both, you usually lose, since the marines side is mostly about teamwork.

I think this forum was down for a couple weeks or few now, so yey it's back!

Anyway, I think it's great to be able to know how to command, as some games there just isn't a good commander. One game I was playing bast and the base was being overrun, so I was in a vent and the comm built a cc in the vent and I had to rebuild the base. I couldn't do much with 0 resource nodes, and even with a fairly high roof, the IP's dumb super-high spawn point got the tops of the marine heads stuck in the ceiling, so we couldn't do much from there as I was the only one that could move.

So back on topic, though I havn't commanded much, I can say that there are some marines who follow orders great, some who are very attentitive to their surroundings, and some who don't do anything much, or they do their own thing. Actually there are many different kinds of players, so while a really good commander may be able to get a lot of players to work together and follow orders, it can be difficult for most to be able to control their team on a public server.

I would say you should tell them nicely the strategies to use if you don't see them using them and they are dying too much. If all the marines are building and none are covering, then tell them to have only some build. If they won't listen, then they are dummies and you can stop giving them what they want

    Just want to mention something...
In the last game noone wanted to command. So I jumopd in... warning them not to complain after. Standart, set up inf, armory, Ops, Phase, send em to a hive, Phase, res, tf and 3 Sentrys. Quite all fine, the marines worked with me, gave me status reports, I supplied them with health and ammo when I felt they need... send them to 2nd hive, same precedure. Aliens chicked out.
And whats the best: If been seen as a "good comm". Yey!

But next game. Tried the same... in fact, one marine followed my waypoint to the hive I choose, the other 3 ran off to another one. 2 Rambos and game was quite fast. Those 3 hardly could set a phase up before getting chomped. After that I dont need to say we wasted to much time and which team lost.

So any commander out there who doubts his skills after playing NS for 2 Months... its not always you. Sometimes, but by far not always.

I'm a good commander, but it's so discouraging! No one listens, and when they don't listen and do what they say (though you're the commander) they call you stupid and tell you you suck. Then they all wonder why no one wants to command! Come on guys take it easy on the comms

When I have guys that don't listen to me, I just ignore them. I don't give them ammo, health, weapons, or waypoints. I focus entirely on the guys that ARE working as a team and following orders. Eventually, everyone gets the point.

Just be sure to take care of the guys that are working for you. If a vote to eject you starts, no one in the main group will vote you out if you've been helping them.

I've never been ejected, but I'm sure I've annoyed a few n00bs that kept whining at me.

yes i look after the people that folow orders aswell. If they follow Wp that get Hp and turrets soon after.
I hate when the aliens chicken out to ready room when u r owning as Comm.
I think u need a Commander like soldier in the battle field to lead his soldiers into instead of the comm.

Hopped in command chair once more as noone wanted to comm. Well... we had a great game. Secured one hive, fortified with phase and 3 sentrys. aliens got their 2nd. Tried to siege it, fade took outpost after a loooong battle. Slowly got to HA and HMG, set up another outpost.
Then we smashed that hive after an even longer battle... good game aliens.

And it was like ever... I got some marines to work together, gave em Welder, HA, GL or HMG or even a shotty, and they held of the fades till the sieges finished work. And they fired LONG!

After all, the marines said they thought they already would have been lost, but it was my commanding skill that turned the tide of battle. They said. Cant say im not feeling proud like hell... with a decent marine team, commanding is fun like hardly anyhing else. As it is for the marine team.

I watch the marines in the start. Who follows orders? Who follows oders and does a great job? Those guys get the equip. Noone else. Give em a gift for their work, and they´ll trust u as u trust them.

Damn cant wait to get home and jump in the chair again! AHAHAHA !!!
