"Couldn't initialize the render device" ERROR

During the free game weekend on Steam featuring this game, I decided to download it, but stopped on 50% since the weekend trial was over.
Since I didn't wanted the downloading progress to be over, I bought the game to 'keep' the progress.
Apparently, the progress deleted itself (I don't know how it just happened) so I had to re-download the game.
After the game was downloaded, I tried playing it, but this message appeared that read "Couldn't initialize the render device".
I tried the game-cache check up to see if any files were missing, but there wasn't and was approved; however, the message kept appearing.
Tell me if I need more information for the zip folder since this is my first time making one.

Welcome to the forum :) Pls read this first and then add a techreport. We need more infos about your settings etc. to help you out.

Edit: Read the linked post closely (the techreport you've added shouldn't be generated by the Techsupport.exe of NS2

I went to that page and already got the files verified, but the problem is still persisting. How do I make the tech report generated by NS2 if I don't know how to exactly I know it says it is in the directory, but can you provide a step by step process in making one?

You do a rightclick at Natural Selection 2 in your steam libary > Properties > Local Files > Search Files. Now the explorer will open the NS2 folder.
Inside it there is a techsupport.exe. Run it. Afterwards post the generated tech_support.zip here.

Ok the techreport confimed my guess:

The game is only finding your Intel HD4000, but with this card alone you won't be able to play ns2. So if you do have a normal gpu which one is it? Which other games could you play with that pc etc.

Only thing listed in your DXDIAG is "Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000" which is an integrated video card. (which.. really isnt a video card at all, to most)
Almost any game on steam will have a minimum requirement of a dedicated video card. In NS2's case one with 1 GB of video memory.

So in other words, I have no official GPU that could handle the game? If so, I'm screwed then. Any suggestions on a GPU that will be compatible with a i-5 core 3210M HP laptop?

@Ironhorse in fact i can play even BF3 on low with a HD3000, just NS2 is totally not rdy for the intel drivers.

So then NS2 can't be played on my laptop I guess. Thanks for the help though GhoulofGSG9 and IronHorse I appreciated it.

Ok even with the HD 4000 you can do 2 things:
    1. Install latest driver (Iris)
    2. Install DirectX

Maybe this will help. But i can't promise anything

    Thanks for the options.
I tried the first one, but it didn't work for my laptop it is not compatible
The second one didn't work either since my directx is already the latest.
    Thanks anyway :)

Yeah then there seems to be no way to play NS2 on your laptop. I am sorry but i don't think that this will change any time soon as there are alot more critical bugs out there atm.

That... doesn't change what i said though? ;)
Finding a non 2D game/side scroller on steam which does not have minimum requirements of a dedicated graphics card is almost zilch for a very good reason.
This being said, yes of course you can run NS2 on integrated graphics.. but again its below the minimum requirements for a very good reason - because its not officially supported, generally for performance and technology reasons like shader model versions. (and those minimum requirements are inaccurately too low, imo anyhow)

@vanwolfster Sorry man, after some searches i cant find any 3210M HP laptop that is built for handling a GPU/video card because of their small form factor like a notebook. (and the PSU's capibility)
    :-(

Then I guess I must buy a different laptop. Thanks for trying IronHorse.

    @vanwolfster
Gaming laptops tend to be a bit more, due to their increased performance. I recommend looking at sager laptops for good price / performance. I also recommend a fast CPU clockrate as a priority for NS2.

But really, unless you are always on the move while gaming, i don't recommend a laptop for gaming, due to a myriad of reasons. (and yes i have owned multiple in my life)
Best of luck to you sir!
