They probably took inspiration from the hugely successful Thomas Biskup's Adom fundraising campaign:
$50,000 Demigod
As above and receive the hard bound source code of ADOM for your personal perusal (that's probably something like 10 big tomes of source code). I personally will deliver the books to wherever you live and spend a weekend talking about ADOM, ADOM II, etc. with you if desired. Please understand that you will be required to sign an NDA with this collectors item to not distribute the content.
That said, nobody donated on demigod level either.
But there are a lot of oil sheiks or fresh Chinese millionaires out there, and what do you know, some may be bored.
I have no idea how much they'd get paid, but if it's anything like what software engineers (with uni degree) get here, that's like 30 000$ per month just for paying them. Then add extra costs per employee , and it becomes even more then that and then there's also the part-timers not included in that figure. Plus office space, investments, servers and the like.
And don't forget they don't get all the money they raise, I'm sure steam, humblebundle etc take their cut, then there's taxes as well.
Thanks for posting this link.
I've checked this list and I see David John, and I am like 'Oh yeah, NS2 had some sweet music thanks to him', then I'm like 'wtf... 'had' ??? ', and I realized that I disabled music in a match about 2 months ago because there was a bug with never ending music and I forgot to turn it on later... no menu music, no game end music, not starting music or base near death music... for two months!
75 thousand and 9 main employees...
So it basically amounts to "pay us 8000 bucks each and we will let you watch us work for a week."
That includes the cost of flying the person out, putting them up in a hotel (San Francisco ain't cheap), limousine transferss, and we have more then 9 main employees. Those are just the in office staff, the cost would also cover our offsite staff. We have multiple offsite mappers, riggers/animators, environment artists, and sound/music guy.
And it wouldn't just be "watching us work" there would be a lot of back and forth interaction and discussion and guidance from the person who is doing the project directing.
We of course are asking for more then what the cost would actually be to run the company for a week (though not much more) because it wouldn't be much of a donation if the amount just covered our costs and nothing more.
if I had 75k to spare, it might be worth it just to command hugh to wear his trademark costume - and bring me a coffee.
Record it, make the video highly entertaining, hope it goes viral, enable Youtube partnership, amass 1.5 mil views, and voila - you made your 75k back.
