Tips for improving wireless strength?

This isn't really a technical problem with the game but I wasn't sure where else to go with this.
Basically, I just moved back into college and the wireless connection here is terrible. In the evenings NS2 is virtually unplayable, I keep spiking up to four digit ping. Unfortunately, the college does not support ethernet in student dorms, which really limits my options as far as improving my connection goes. Any suggestions on what I can do to make this a bit more bearable?

I'll pray for you.
I'd suspect the routers / reapeaters they use get waaaaaay too much traffic for them to handle properly, but consdiering this happens in the eveningings I'd be certain this is an issue with their infrastructure.
or maybe you should have chosen a college more close to home >: D
First, download inSSIDer. http://download.cnet.com/inSSIDer/3000-18508_4-10848357.html This will give detailed information on your network and will tell you which channel you're on. When you open inSSIDer find your network name, and find the channel it corresponds with. If any of the other networks on it have the same channel, it is interfering with your internet. A good channel to change it to is 9.
To change the channel of your internet, type your ip address into the big bar at the top of your chrome. If you don't know how to find your ip address, go to command prompt and type in "ipconfig". Your ip should be somewhere similar to mine.
"Wireless LAN adapter wireless network connection 3:
Default Gateway........1.231.1.23" (this is not real)
Now, when you have typed your ip into your address bar, a login pops up. In most computers the default username is "admin", and the pass is either "1234", "password", or "setup". If it isn't any of these you have changed it and need to figure it out.
I have cisco wireless, and I don't know if the interface is the same for everyone else, but when you open it find the wireless tab, and find the channel button. Switch to any empty channel that isn't in inSSIDer. 9 is a good one that isn't usually used.
With regard to options in this case, The easiest option is to play ns2 in an academic building. They tend to keep the dorms off the main university network because they are generally bandwidth sucking, virus infected, maniacs trying to steam 20 tabs of 1080p video each. As a result, they cause major network issues for everyone else and so are living in their own semi private part of the network. Get off that network and good times.
... I'm at home, and playing through an ethernet cable out of the window to the modem downstairs.
Are you sure this is wireless signal related?
My room does contain a phone jack. Would it be possible for me to purchase a modem, connect that to the phone jack, and then run an ethernet cable from that to my computer?
Just kidding. Does that really change the infastucture that much? All it is, is basically changing the frequency of the wifi.
Besides, if he can't login to the ip address he wouldn't be able to do that anyways. Best option would be to buy a repeater.
