[Linux] Game Crashes on launch

I installed Ubuntu today on my PC and been working up all the quirks to see what is going around.
I installed steam searched up the forum of what I needed, finally got the launcher working.
Ubuntu is updated to have the latest packages.
After that I installed the game , and a black screen occurred and on top of that some quick pop up saying: "Fatal error".
The pop up is gone before any errors can be displayed. Basically I have no idea what to search for.
I tried a sudo reboot , still the same thing. So I figured go read the forums! I launched steam using the terminal and this output came out below after that I tried to launch the game.
Basically wondering if my Ubuntu is missing something or its a bug that needs to be squished

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Intel Core 2 quad Q9450 2.66gighz
OS type: 64bit.
Radeon 4850 512mb

Do you have non mesa video drivers installed? have you started steam with the correct locale?
