Waiting for GPU

I'm getting low fps and I believe it to be my cpu. When i do r_stats, it says 0 ms waiting for gpu.
My specs are an eight core amd GHz CPU, an amd 7870 gpu, and 16 gigs of ram.
Frankly its overkill for this game and I'm wondering if its a software problem.
Running Ubuntu 13.04.

    I don't think r_stats actually works anymore. Regardless oh how terrible my performance gets it always says 0 ms waiting for render and gpu.

    Good to know. Any other ideas possibly?

    No, it doesn't always say 0, I see it jump to 2ms sometimes on biodome when I drop to 140fps.

    Also eight cores doesn't mean anything as the game only uses two, it's all about the power of each individual cores not how many you have. What model CPU?

    That's why I think there is a problem, it doesn't change. And that's poor programming if it only uses two. AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz.

    It's not poor programming, almost no games use more than 2 and I guarantee you none use more than 4.

    The processor seems new enough that it really should be performing better, how low is the fps? Also just realised, since you're on linux, obviously you have to use opengl, it's not quite polished yet and is buggy for some people, it could just be that.

    2-5 fps. And opengl is working brilliantly in all my other games.

    Oh, and I checked out the performance and it was maxing out all cores while running.

    When I say opengl is buggy, I mean for NS2, not in general. Again, it only uses 2 cores.

    Then why the taxing of my cpu?

    if r_stats 1 is sued, you see a waiting on gpu or waiting on gpu. I did understand you have low values in those right?
    The fps value has a ms behind it shown how long it takes to compile each frame. Also low?
    Your prediction count should not be to high either.

    Is the server you are on handling ok? net_stats 1 will show tickrates and server errors. Any tickrate below 29ish/30 may slowly become a problem if its consistent. (so like a small dip to 28 sometimes isnt a super problem)
    If the server is bad, you have choke, or high latency or bad rates you will experience lag & fps problems.

    Did you try without any single mod?

    last you can use profiler.
    * type profile
    * play game but avoid spacebar
    * after the problem occurs, press spacebar to freeze profiler.
    * use [ and ] to select the highest red column. (see it go lightred/yellow). You are in fact selecting frames.
    * use mouse to click open the biggest purple bar in this specific frame.
    * screenshot this and post. (devs/pts usually have experience on what they see in this pic)

    It doesn't change from 0. Yes its low as well. I'm only on the tutorial. No mods. And when I use profile it just crashes on loading map.

    it does that, crash almost nonstop on mapload.
    use profile when the map is loaded & you are ingame.

    So I got it up to about 30 fps. I have to use a beta driver that isn't supported, however. Hopefully I don't crash too often. Thanks for the help!

    @westleyfsm,

    A few things people have said worked well for them in linux:
    People reported switching to a 2d window manager caused a significant increase in frame rate
    They also said that turning off Catalyst AI also helped.

    generically, sjn has been pushing r_mt false in console, haven't tried it but he seems to think it helps so who knows.
