I've been in the mood for a Savage-like game recently and this seems to be the only active game of it's genre that I could find. So my question is, is it any good? I typically take on a commander role in these games.
I've seen a few videos but don't really know much about the community, are there clans that operate frequently etc?

But yeah, that's just, like, my opinion, man.
If you're already thinking about competitive play, I'm going to assume that you've some experience of this in another game and that you're a reasonably good player. In that case, you should have no problem learning the game, but be warned that it's a fairly steep learning curve, and there are some (from the pub perspective) insanely good players around, and you should not expect to be able to kill them often.
In short:
BUY IT NOW
Apart from that, there are regularly (balance-)updates, a big content update is incoming.
Just make sure to get past the steep learning curve and stick to the game; it's worth it. Also, I recommend to get ~30-50 hrs of gameplay experience first, before trying to comm. It helps you understanding how everything works - and the normally nice community is allergical to rookie comms
If you want to mostly command, you'll need to put your authority and set the rules in the team or most won't even bother to listen to you. You have to command with an iron fist, if you want stuff done! Communication is essential for a good game.
Now about the game, well it's good, though not many people play it these days. Although it's not hard to find a populated server. Players are mixed about, if the game is good or bad. ( that's why there is a mod 'better NS2 249' ) It's a hard game, which involves a lot of frustration but if you are in a communicating team it will be a blast. Suddenly kills and deaths have no meaning, when the entire team works as one to accomplish the ultimate goal: kill the opponents. But there will be boring moments, where no one tries to work together, which the game is not at fault here but the players.
Oh and you should make sure that your PC is high end or you'll have trouble with the FPS. Other than that, I can't think of anything else to say.
But what if I'm not into that whole brevity thing?
Allso spend the 10mins doing the tutorial, its a small time spend and alot of mistakes avoided
On a side note, if you indeed are a long time fps gamer, you will get better at communicating, and become a better fps gamer in general. A skill that translates over to any other multiplayer game. So even if you do find the game to to suck, you will atleast get that from it, and your skills as a gamer will raise faster in NS2 than any other game.
In my opinion you can't be only a commander all the time in this game.
1 it's not the way it is.
2 a good commander knows the ups and downs of every unit. So he train himself.
Advices:
-Play the tutorial map BEFORE joining servers. Help yourself by reading some info i you don't get it. Alien side is a bit complex at first glance. In this special map you will be able to play every unit on both side. 2 hours in the training map worth 40 hours running the maps on server without a clue.
-Take 10 minutes on each maps by making your own local server and it should do it for the 'directions'. The common place names etc... Watch you map regularly (default key = C).
With that, even as a rookie you will be a better player than some jerks above the 20hrs line.
You can watch some video made by pro guys (being a better skulk etc...) but you won't wait that long do you ?
UWE might have a little butter on their shared, dry slice of old bread today.
Fine, but a shared sandwich, no need to spoil them!
I don't think 10 minutes is enough for a NS2 map
I've put about 850 hours into this game by now, which at current price is like 0.03$ for one hour of entertainment. Where I live, you can get one small cracker for this price. Which brings us to this price equation:
One hour of natural selection, USD = one small cracker, USD = 0.03 USD
Now let's compare amount of satisfaction I get from each:
One hour of natural selection > one small cracker > 0.03 USD
So, if you love crackers, NS is even better AND is worth buying.
If you liked the savage games, you'll like Natural Selection.
NS2 has a little bit of a higher learning curve to be good in my opinion compared to Savage 2 as NS2 is more "first person shooter" based compared to Savage 2.
While you say you like commanding, you'll want to spend a LOT of time playing as just a player before you command. This will give you an idea what of tech trees and strats should be used first (unless it's a bad commander) and give you different tactic ideas for the different maps as you'll also want to learn the maps in and out as well.
(no one likes a commander commanding who doesn't know these things, even newbies don't like an inexperienced comm.)
So, in summary, you'd be crackers not to buy this game!
