Authorization before loading map: Fails

bought the game 2 sales ago and I love it. However, today, the server list showed under 10 servers in operation. Most of these servers had a LAN suffix in the server name. Upon trying to join any of the servers on the list, the loading screen gets stuck on authorization and then tells me something about the firewall (common problem, but be assured that this is not the case).

Am I the only one?

edit: its was authenticating, not authorizing.

Something's gone wrong with your game. (Duh)
Have you tried to Verify the integrity of your game cache?
That's Steam->Libraries->Games->Find natural selection 2->Right click, properties->Local Files->Verify integrity of game cache.
Come back after you've tried that.

It shows no progress in verification. I'll have to redownload. How can I preserve my config files?

Problem solved. I was in offline mode on steam. Silly me.
