os : win7 x64
ram : 4g
video memory : 2g

The game is still playable but sometimes desktop pop up and tell me it is soon run out of memory, which is kinda annoying.

4 GB is plenty for NS2. I've never seen NS2 use even 2 GB of RAM, which leaves over 2GB (plenty) for the rest of the OS. Of course, if you have a ton of programs open in the background (and limited virtual memory), it could eventually run out -- but that would be true for any game.

You might find this thread interesting. (I don't know if it completely applies since the performance patch, but expect the game is still largely the same).

Sounds like you have other programs running in the background using a bunch of memory as NS2 shouldn't take more than 2GB (and most of the time less than 1GB).

I have the exact same setup (win7-64, 4gb system 2gb gfx) and never have any problems with Desktop popups.

I believe the game can only use 2gb max anyway because it's a 32bit app.

i have 8gb but i think its not neccessary more important is the speed of your memory i had 1.3 ghz(4gb) and upgraded to 1.6 ghz it fells like the framerate is more stable

for win7 i think 4gb should be minimum because the system itself uses like 2 gb(i had always 40-50% used memory without playing)

    i have 3gb video memory

I had only steam , avira , logitech gaming software , ccc and ns2 running.
However the problem is fixed after i change the texture from high to medium.

I wonder why...isnt it related to only the video memory ? does it have anything to do with system memory ?
    (no shared memory, 7850 w/ 2g)

Games and other high memory apps circumvent this with Large Address Aware

    That's cool to know.

I haven't seen Natural Selection 2 go over 1.5GB, that said depending what else you got running on the backgrounds that changes thing also if you are running 64 bit you need more RAM as well compare the 32 bit version of a OS.

you can use process monitor from http://www.sysinternals.com to see what programs are eating all your memory.
Windows 7 resource manager does a good job on that also.
