This might be related: Beware Shady Key Resellers and Discount Steam Keys. When and more importantly where did you purchase NS2?

Steam support would be the first place you should contact, since it's an issue WITH steam itself.

However if valve is unable to assist you (doubt that) then your best bet would to be to e-mail the UWE team here with proof of purchase and proof of the games removal from your account and see if they can help you out. (at least in my mind, this would be the right thing to do)

Aren't steam and humble bundle the only legit NS2 sellers?

"Right now there are only two official places to buy Natural Selection 2; through Steam or through our website via the Humble Store (The Humble Store option is temporarily disabled due to this issue). If you see Natural Selection 2 available anywhere else — like the many sites out there that sell Steam keys at a discount — then you are not buying it from us and there is no way to know if that key is legitimate. As as result, we strongly discourage purchasing from these sites.

Be careful what you buy. And the good old saying: "if it's too good to be true it probably is".

    Don't forget greenman gaming.

If you purchased Natural Selection 2 from anywhere but Steam, Greenmangaming and that's it. Then you purchased a stolen copy of the game. You might be able to get a refund if you contact your payment method place of business (paypal, visa, bank etc).

Also, buying it at retail? You mean a physical store? You cannot currently get NS2 retail like that. At least not legitimately.

Hmm if it is the one I've found, this is from their FAQ. I dunno, but it seems rather shady to me...

Yes, it is legal! It is not illegal to buy virtual goods or accounts as many people still think.

For your issue, I'd refer you to this quote from the article I've linked:

"If your key was deactivated, we recommend you contact the site you purchased it from for a full refund"

    And this:

"Right now there are only two official places to buy Natural Selection 2; through Steam or through our website via the Humble Store (The Humble Store option is temporarily disabled due to this issue). If you see Natural Selection 2 available anywhere else — like the many sites out there that sell Steam keys at a discount — then you are not buying it from us and there is no way to know if that key is legitimate. they do not want to refund me because they say that is not the fault with them

You bought a key probably purchased with stolen credit card info. Tough luck, and that's why you should stick to legitimate vendors.

There is your problem. Many of those WoW gold buying/selling sites are in a legal grey area where its technically not illegal to do, but against the EULA for the game (meaning they can ban your account but not sure you or take you to court). However, I wouldn't be surprised if those type of sites also dabbled in reselling games from hacked accounts or bought via stolen credit cards. You should contact that them again and provide this link when asking for a refund.

WOT picked that up for being untrustworthy instantly. The only current legitimate places to get NS2 is Greenmangaming and Steam store. Also to save $1 you would risk losing $24?

And if it still does not work and they still don't want to listen. Try to be refund at your bank, but normally everything is explained on the article linked above.

It is their fault. They knowingly sold you a bad key. Do you really think your key is the only key to go bad from them? They are well aware of the problem. Let them know that you will be disputing the transaction with your bank/credit card. Let them know that you will be reporting them for fraud since you did not receive the item you paid for. Let them know that you will also be publicizing their fraud.

Dispute the charge on your credit card, then buy it from UWE directly, steam, or GMG
