Game freezes on startup

I'm getting this since the latest patch, not every time but occasionally. The client freezes just before the main menu finishes loading i.e. the menu texts get stuck before "dropping" down to their correct place and the news window doesn't load. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the news window because even when it doesn't get stuck the client lags for maybe a second at that point, before loading the news.
The process becomes unresponsive and I have to kill it. I haven't actually waited long enough to see if it will do a proper crash (or finish loading), I'll do that next time. Usually it works after restarting the game.
Windows 7 64-bit, GTX 660 with latest drivers etc.
