Custom characters?

I seem to remember UWE saying something way back in Alpha about being able to customize our marine model characters with different headgears and even switching between male and female models. Is this still going to happen? They even had the female marine model on the NS2 front page for the longest time. Don't know how everyone else feels about it but to me it was one of the most looked forward to features that never made it into release.

I don't know about the female model, but I think I remember some kind of troll post (or even aprils fools day post) about headgears or hats - meant as hint at the once great game TF2 which is all about hats, item farming, crate key buying and stuff like that nowadays. I may be wrong though.

I kept hearing Hugh mention it in their dev Q&A. He made it sound like it's something on their mind that's not even close to happening at least for now. I assume they'll start dropping hints if they decide to do it but it definitely does not sound like a priority for them right now.

I wonder what the deal with the female Marine model is? I thought that was pretty high priority.

I'm fairly certain that the hats was just a joke at TF2's expense. Some custom armors are already in the game (Black armor, Green armor, Deluxe armor), so more may be added.
Female marines are still a planned addition, but with the extra coding required, is still on the to-do list after optimization. For example the Exo railguns were also on this to-do list; I'm assuming a bit higher as they were more of a 'feature complete' part, rather than just a vanity addition.

This is something we've been talking about a lot lately. As soon as this upcoming content patch is tied off, we are going to start putting time into the female marine model, some possible marine armor upgrade model changes, and looking into customization options for both sides, more extensively.

I don't agree with customizable characters, but the armor changing with each armor upgrade would be nice - it must look tougher with each upgrade.

Sounds great!! I hope we can make "individual" changes to our headgear like HUD eye piece type, helmet type, face type etc rather than head option 1, 2, 3 but either way would be a welcome change. Alien customization is certainly a surprise, had no idea you guys were working on that too. Looking forward to what's coming up!

Don't understand the point of this, plenty of skins and cosmetic changes on the workshop. And other people don't have to see it, another positive.
Armor changing visibly with levels sounds alright, except marines lose the upgrades as soon as the arms lab is down. So it would need to change in real time to reflect to actual level in that case.

Nanites could generate the armour upgrade, the upgrade materialise (or dematerialise) like we currently see marine bodies vanish after death.

Custom models are already possible, but they won't pass consistency checks. Only models designed and implemented by UWE will pass the test and get included in the official game. that's why you won't see game-breaking model colors or sizes.

So no, you won't find pink marines on an unmodded server.

Why are pink marines a problem? Last i checked, alien vision highlights them anyway. Pink aliens on the other hand...

We're... er, I heard UWE is in the process of licensing Pikachu for a Gorge skin replacement. It might be undecided on if they're going to be replacing the Gorge, or just putting it into Pikachu feetie-pyjamas though.

Hmmm making a bunch of separate customization for the black armor, DLC and normal seems like a giant waste of dev time to me. Yeah the armor upgrade changes are a good idea but the customization options don't belong in this game imo. Whatever happened to the separate marine black armor hands model we were promised?
