Hello, So basically I get low fps, as in drops to 45 and 50 on 1920 resolution,OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

I was wondering if it is safe to over clock it to 3.00Ghz, also would It yeld Fps? Dont bother telling me I need an upgrade.

    overclocking a laptop cpu wont be a big overclock due to lack of sufficient cooling. Download prime 95 and a temperature meter. Increase the clock speed incrementally, 0.1ghz is a good number. If it runs prime 95 for 15 minutes without shutting down, or over heating, then it's stable 'enough'. Once you find the clock speed where it becomes unstable, go to the next highest stable one below it, and you've found your overclock, for additional 'for sure' stability go one more below it. I would not increase voltages on a laptop it will be too hot.
    - my understanding of intel turbo is that it only boosts the primary core in use, while downclocking the remaining cores, it's more of an efficiency methad rather than an over clock.

    Thank you for the valuable information, You saved me from melting my already beastly laptop from melting (it loves games it just doesnt like Ns2 because Ns2 slept with my laptops mother)

    You can overclock laptop CPUs, but you have to be extra careful with the temps because laptop cooling is much worse than desktop. The M17xR4 is a pretty beastly laptop, so it may be able to handle a small overclock to the high 3.X GHz/low 4.0GHz. Though, I would do some searching/asking in other forums more suited to either the M17xR4 or laptop overclocking.

    Turbo is a safe and in warrenty way of overclocking. (its not really overclocking)

    What it basicly does is it puts cores in sleep mode. So if you have a quad core (4) and 3 cores sleep, only one core is working and producing big heat.
    Turbo then starts to overclock that single core up to its maximum OR untill it hits a safe limit on temperature, it would hit with all 4 cores active.

    Turbo can work with more cores active, it just does not overclock as high.
    All cores not in park are overclocked with turbo.
    you must enable C states in your bios. (basicly power efficient modes must be set to on, probably same for windows, but a must for bios)

    My i7 930 goes from 2.8 to 3.0ish and from 4 cores (8 with hyperthread) to 1 core.

    Intel has a monitor program which shows exactly how far it goes in ghz. Intel® Turbo Boost Technologie monitor 2.6. Compare this to the maximum number of your model and you know how good it works. (intel.com > search cpu model + turbo)
