Hi,
I recently bought NS2 and although i have been enjoying the game, i have been confronted with a problem with a certain file called "minidump.dmp" wich sends me to a Debug report 4 out of 5 times that i am trying to enter a server. I can honestly say that this has become quite annoying since i have been playing on a recent computer and that i have the drivers updated, wich leave me with no apparent explanation as to why this happens.
Any ideias?
Thanks

A bluescreen can only be caused by threads running in kernel mode.
This mainly boils down to drivers or the hardware itself. NS2 does not run in kernel mode and thus can not be the direct cause. It can however push a driver in a way unintended, and if the driver also has a bug exposed by ns2.. a bluescreen could occur.
Some programs can also run in kernel mode.
First thing to do is check:
C:\windows\minidump for dmp files. These should never be large.
Other dump files can exist in c:\windows, game directories or your userprofile but be a lot larger. The ones in your game directories or profile are not from a bluescreen but a simple program crash, and in essence, unrelated.
So first things first:
* does your pc reboot / bluescreen and cause a system dump file? If not, it must be a program dump file. if you are unsure where to look, search the whole computer for the most recent .dmp file with the search option.
* if it is small enough, upload it and link it. It is important that we know if you're computer is 32b or 64b.
* if it is not small enough & a system dump file.. go to 'control panel' and then 'system'. In the advanced settings, there are boot & restore settings.
In here you can set the dump file to minidump, successfully making it smaller next time your windows goes into kernel panic.
For now it isn't doing this error, only in certain servers, if it happens again i will try to post the .dmp file.
The dump file you want is probably in your game or profile directory.
piece of info..
When you finished sendinf the report (in essence send the dump file) to microsoft, or choose not to send & close the menu, the file itself gets deleted.
BEFORE you send the file, so in the report menu itself, it has some detail options. Somewhere in there is the exact location of the temporary small dump file.
* Go to the location specified, by for example copying the location into your run/explorer option in windows, or the search bar.
* Copy the file to a safe spot, like your my documents.
* then send or do not send the report as you do normally.
* the dump file is now gone in the original spot, but you made a backup.
* Show us the shiny dump file, or send it to uwe if you want to keep it hidden if you are that paranoid.
Now no need to be paranoid there, this isn't bad.
If microsoft receives enough reports for crashes with the same reason(s) they will either fix it themselves, or contact the company in question. Usually driver related.
Then again, nothing wrong with manually sending the file to uwe id suspect.
Probably a mix between drivers & how the game uses the drivers or something.

Hi sjm,
It sounds like the game is crashing and the crash reporter is being displayed. If you submit the crash report and include your e-mail address we can look up what the issue is and hopefully resolve it quickly.
Thanks,
Max"
Yeah, will do that next time the game crashes. Thank you, you've been very helpful (:
If a game crashes and Windows reports the crash, then what I explained happened.
If ns2 crashes and a crash reporter from uwe grabs the crash first, then yes.. it would send it to uwe.
So far I know, the windows crash reporter is the last one. So a uwe one should go first, I was just unaware they had one.
Want to be sure? Make a picture of the crash report(er) next time. Because if we are speaking of the wrong crash reporter, we are speaking of the wrong crash dump, and then most posts have been useless so far.
When you press CTRL+ALT+DEL to close the program it will say "ns2.exe has stopped responding."
Wait for it to respond, on that popup there will be a small link that says "details", click that and then it will display "apphang" etc.. bunch of info that won't make sense to you.
Please copy and paste that here.
Thanks for your patience.
